Intermediate
As with buying any used car, it's a crap shoot. The intermediate shaft issue is the big one, but only affects a small percentage of cars. Personally, I would avoid pre-2000 models altogether. The '03 model is slightly preferable as it has a glass rear window and other minor upgrades. A search of AutoTrader suggests that you should be able to find a 2000-2003 model with under 60k miles in your price range.

So you want to know about buying a Boxster
There is a site that has about a dozen articles focused on sharing info about buying a Boxster including model year differences lists, best and worst features, problem areas and general buying advice. Assembled by a guy who had 2 of them and loved both but who tries to be informative and not a fanboy.

Very timely as my girlfriend/SO was talking about doing track days at some point in the future. I think the tip cars are getting pretty cheap and I could probably do the maintenance on it myself.

Drifting
If you're planning on tracking a 986, you will probably want to get a supplemental roll bar; the roll hoops work well on concrete/asphalt, but ground loading is too high and they sink into dirt/sand. Many tracks won't let you run without it.

Especially because of where you live, I would suggest the glass rear window which means an '03 or later car or one that has had its top replaced. With those, you are going to struggle at this time of year to find a good car for $15k is my guess.

2003+ has a glass rear window. So, if its below, maybe 50 degrees and you put the top down, you don't have to worry about the plastic cracking or performing the familiar "chop" when putting the top down.
Plus, since its been a month, any new car yet?
