how much do you guys spend on maintenance?
I've had a 944 for years and got tired of the constant need for expensive repairs. I got a higher mileage 2000 boxster last year and parked the 944, thinking that upkeep on the more modern car would be less of a pain in the ***/ wallet. $6500 later after less than a year of ownership, and i see that I may have been mistaken. I have only put about 2k miles on the car haha
I understand these cars are not cheap to repair, but this seems a little insane to me. what have your experiences been keeping these cars running?

Don't know what I spend. As the miles accumulate more and more things, so far "little things" (thankfully), need attention.
There are the regular service items, wear items. Oil/filter service every 5K miles. Rear tires every 20K miles, fronts every 40K miles. Brake/clutch fluid flush/bleed every 2 years.
Then as more miles accumulate the less frequently serviced items then require servicing/attention: Plugs, transmission/diff fluids. I change the coolant every 4 to 5 years.
Reads like you bought a car that needed some attention. If so this is probably due to the less than thorough check out you gave the car. Live and learn.
Giving you the benefit of the doubt, even if your checkout was perfect, a car can go from not having any problem to having a problem in a very short time. I remember when my Boxster's water pump failed. One day it was fine. The next day I heard a strange noise and after some investigation id'd the water pump as the source. Just like that the water pump went from quiet/ok to noisy and not ok. Sure, it took 172K miles but my point is that it didn't manifest any signs of any problems until it did. Had I been buying the car the day before I'd not flagged the water pump as needing replacement.
Same with the fuel pump. The engine started every time without any issue at all, then at an engine start, just like the bazillion before it, the engine started just fine and I wasn't even half backed out my parking space when the engine died. Fuel pump quit just like that. Like the water pump though the fuel pump took around 200K miles before it just up and quit. Had I any inkling the fuel pump was about to fail I would have had the thing replaced.
Reads like you had a rough patch with you new used Boxster right out of the gate. It happens.
What will likely happen from now to a quite a ways out into the future is the car will cost you little -- relatively speaking -- for service/repair although if you drive the car a lot this of course will have what you spend on service, and repair, up higher.

Burning Brakes
5 years of ownership, the only replacement expense were 2 O2 sensors at around $300 total done at a muffler shop. Beyond that it was oil and filters. But before those 5 years started I spent $3k putting everything into "my standards" shape. Tires, alignment, trans, belts, fluids, brake rotors, pads, plugs, coils, oils, filters, etc. Once that all was done, cheaper than my same year Honda. I was lucky.
edit: A battery too at around $170 but that was a DIY even though it was an Optima.
So say $200 a year.
Had I not wanted the Optima, the N-spec PS2s, and deferred the second O2 sensor, I could have spent even less. None was vitally needed at the point I replaced them.

Tires aside, over 7 years and 65k miles of of ownership, I think my average annual maint & repair costs for my 2004 Boxster S were about $150-200/year. It's a whole lot cheaper if you do all the work yourself.

Like DMB I also replaced my 1987 944S with a new 2001 Boxster S. As was mentioned by a list member a 944 is as high maintenance as a helicopter. It was probably cheaper owning the new Boxster than the 944.
Turned in the 01 lease in 2004 and several months later purchased a CPO 01 base Boxster with 27k on the clock. I would guess on average I spent $ 500.00 /year from 27k to 90k.
Last summer I freshened up many major systems such as water pump, motor mount, AOS, MAF,(6) Coil packs, one A/C condenser and relay, filters etc.
I guess I spent over 6 thousand on a car worth ..... 6 thousand, but I am sure like many of us here the car is worth far more in our minds, as I plan on keeping it another ten years at least I realize that you have to maintain them to as high a spec as possible if you want to enjoy the true Porsche experience.
