Default Diagnostic Tool

What's the best diagnostic tool for the Cayenne?
I've seen a few but want the best one available that will do the most things.

The best is the Porsche PIWIS - $15,000/year rental from Porsche. It's the best available and will do the most things.

Alternatives are Durametric ($300 for 3 VIN#'s), iCarScan ($200 for unlimited VIN#'s and 5 different manufacturers.) Neither is the equal of the PIWIS, but they are a bit more affordable.

This is at least as much of a question as a suggestion ...

I've noticed on eBay (here in the US) where people are renting the professional (unlimited VINs) version of Durametric for $30-$50 for 7 days. It seems like it might be a worthwhile experiment. Has anyone here done that sort of a rental?

iCarScan looks promising!

I have the Foxwell nt520 and it works quite well on my 955 Cayenne and it works even better on my 997.1 911

I have Durametric and iCarScan X431. As best I can tell, the feature set is the same on both for my Porsches -- so my preference is for the iCarScan X431 because i) it works on 4 other car marques of my choosing, ii) it's not locked to a limited set of VINs (as is the Durametric Enthusiast), iii) I prefer the phone interface versus having to wrestle a laptop out to my car, and iv) it's cheaper than the most basic Durametric. From what I can tell, I can even do some coding on the iCarScan (as you can on Durametric) -- but BEWARE, the coding features are not documented and not always super intuitive, so I've avoided them other than adjusting air suspension ride height. You can reset the service reminder, airbags, reset the transmission learning, etc.

Note that iCarScan is not perfect. While Durametric doesn't get great customer service reviews, the sellers of iCarScan are likely even more difficult to deal with, although I've not had any issues that have required support. iCarScan (actually the EZDiag App they use) will sometimes have trouble connecting over bluetooth, and requires me to re-launch the app. The interface is OK, but not amazing -- not that I thought Durametric was great -- they're actually pretty similar in that regard.

I also like using a cheap ELM327 OBD scanner with the Torque app for a few basic things like logging fuel trims and confirming OBD readiness. For very basic trouble shooting, the ELM327 scanners can be surprisingly helpful.

Thank you for your very informative post!
It is just the information I need to decide which one I will buy.

Or VCDS.
I have both VCDS and icarscan. VCDS much more detailed (almost every module is actually made by VW and shared with a Touareg).

VCDS is only good on the 955, it is far less capable on the 957 as the 957 has newer style electronics that VCDS is not as compatible with.

But I’m not sure that’s entirely correct. I’ve just seen a full scan of a 957 with VCDS. Looks exactly the same as a 955.
However I don’t have one so not sure.

VCDS is still capable on the 957, just not as capable as on the 955, and a far-cry from what it can do on a VW/Audi vehicle. Also, you have to do some wizardry with the wiring for it to see the engine module as some of the CAN bus lines are on a different pin for Porsche vs VW. Besides that, nothing is officially supported so you'll have a hard time finding a solution if you run into a problem. It may be a good solution for someone as long as they're fine with it's limitations.

For anyone curious, here's my scan of the 957 GTS (just modules, some info redacted) with stock VCDS. For example, it does not see the headlight ballasts (which I believe it is able to on a 955).

Interesting. No headlights on my 955 CTT either. Or PCM.
Basically the only Porsche bits!

See where it says labels: then numbers. That means that those exact modules are fitted to other VAG cars and there is a complete list of the coding and block info.
