Default Patching Leather Tears from Seat Belts

So despite my best efforts, I have one hole in my leather and another will pop eventually. I have kids and sports and have to put the seats down. I tried everything to stave off the inevitable but here it is. I took it to a leather shop in town, good one, and it's expensive, requires replacing the entire leather panel and it'll just happen again. I have a leather couch I patched downstairs for about $20, $10 for the patch and $10 for some serious super glue called shoe glue or something. I can't imagine but thought I'd ask, anyone have any better ideas?

Nope. "Proper" repair is replacing the panel. As you have found, not cheap.

Finding a 'patch piece' and gluing it into place with a flexible glue (Shoe Goo is a good one) is one option, especially given that you know full well that it will happen again.

Another alternative might be replacing the seat section.

Is it the back seat? Is it a common color?
Are there any in a nearby junkyard?

It's not too hard to pull the seat section (Base or back) and replace it.

Absolutely no idea what it would cost from a junkyard, or if you would even be able to find one in better shape than the current one.
But you asked for ideas.

Used seats on ebay are rather cheap. I had a tear in my back seat and a nice used read cushion was less than $50 shipped. But since you have kids I wouldn't worry about it, it will just continue to happen.

Guys, thanks for the feedback. I'm going to go with the smallest possible patch for the moment, plan on a slightly larger one next time and so on until I get to the edge of the leather panel and then look for a junkyard seat. It's common tan. Great idea on the junkyard or ebay seat BTW. Thanks. Not sure the soft touch leather is terribly common, but it's a great idea.

Maybe something like this? It would go bad sooner but it's removable and replaceable a dozen times in the same roll.

What do you mean by "a leather shop"? Is it an auto upholstery shop?

Kinda both, auto leather upholstery shop. We have a fantastic auto upholstery shop in town but for leather auto upholstery specifically I went somewhere else for a quote.

Here's a pic. Sucks. Did the best I could. My car is a time capsule except for this and some wear on the soft touch paint in spots.

A good shop can pull the cover and sew in a look-alike vinyl panel pretty inexpensively, and you won't know it's vinyl unless you slice it open.

Wow, I never seen that before and I put my seats down all the time. Are you tilting the lower cushion forward to fold the seat down? If so, the belt receptacle folds down as well.

Oh trust me, I'm doing it right and I pay extra care to the seat buckles. I've had four 955's, been driving these things for like 16 years. Maybe you've got a rare anti-defective one The buckles just don't always stay down completely as you're folding the backs down.

While they're at it, how about having the upholstery shop stitch up some covers that you could slide over the seat belt receptacles to protect the seats when you fold them down?

That's a great idea. Don't know if it would help but it's worth a try. I've packed them with towels though many times and I don't know how well that did because I wasn't entirely consistent. Wish I'd thought of this a long time ago, but I bet wrapping each with a small washcloth would probably have done well, kept them wedged down where they belong too. If I fix it, I'll try that and see what it does.
