Default POLL: Do you have a locking rear diff

I'm just trying to work out my chances of finding a car with a locking rear diff.

a. When I push the selector forwards 3 times I get 2 lights on the image like "C" in the diagram below
b. When I push the selector forwards 3 times I get 3 lights on the image like "D" in the diagram below. When I look on my Build/Option code sticker in the spare wheel compartment I have the option code (1Y1 or PT2 or PT3)

You might know this already, but it's easy to find on 958 models...

Thanks, I didn't know that. I really want the low range so I hadn't spent much time looking passed the 2009 models and just focussed on 2007/09.

If the car I want turns out to be a unicorn I might have to go that way.

Thanks
Dave

I don't know how impossible to find a legit Transyberia package car is, but believe all of those had the locking rear diff.

There was one offered for sale here about 4 or 5 months ago, they were asking about $70k, probably not unreasonable but I would knock it around too much.

Interesting to note. The locking rear diff and PDCC were options on Transsiberria. I would have thought they would be standard features too.

Is this something that is possible to install on a Cayenne without a locking rear diff?

I'm working on a way to do that, it doesn't look like I'll ever find a car with the factory fitted locker which is really disappointing because the factory one is more than just a locker.

I don't think the slip sensing auto lockers will work properly with the electronics in the car, I'd say it will need to be a manually engaged on/off system like the air lockers. There are a couple of manufacturers here and I have sent emails to their R&D guys but I don't hold much hope in getting any response. I don't think the potential sales figures are enough to excite them. I think it will need to be something I adapt myself.

Rennlister LupoSK has some information about adaptations that could be useful as this has been done in his country.

There is a thread out there if you search for Off-road Technology Package I1Y1. What I found is that the control for the stepper motor would have to be separate switch and would not be able to be integrated into the regular electronic systems. IIRC, many of the Toureg locking difs will fit, but you have to match the gear ratio to what you have in the front or change both of them out. I have no idea what that would do to the factory electronics.

I am a relative novice on this topic, so please take it with a grain of salt.

I prefer the idea of using the Touareg diff, the problem I am having is knowing which one fits and I still have to sort out a solution for the front locker. No problem swapping out the crown wheel and pinion to match ratios but which one fits the car and which are a match for strength ? Do the ones in the smaller engined cars have the same strength housing, matching splines etc. ?

I am ok to make a controller for the diff motor and run it as an independent system, it has a couple of advantages by being able to be switched on in high range and without the centre diff locked. It can also be controlled to variable degrees of lock.

I don't think it will upset the existing electronics.

As I recall, there were only 4 Cayenne's imported to North America with rear differential. It's more common with Touregs but it's the opposite, since it's the front lockers that they are usually missing. Some are buying parts from the other brand and are modifying them to have full lockers. Front, center and rears.

I am also very diligently searching for the unicorn rear locking differential in the 2008-10 model range. After couple of years of searching the classifieds and also Google searching I located these 21 Cayennes that exist in the USA.
