Default ERG (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Valve questions.

2006 S

Developed a "thumping" noise that seemed to be coming from behind the passenger side air pump. Initially thought it was a bad repair on the Venturi Tube. Pulled the tube and re-did the repair, but the noise was still present.

Pulled the tube off of the air pump to see if that helped and found exhaust pumping out of the tube.

From what I understand, this means I have a bad ERG Valve on that side? The ERG Valve is behind the air pump, but needs to be removed from the bottom of the car I believe.

1. I read you can just plug the end of the tube that goes into the air pump to stop what is basically now an exhaust into the engine bay - this is safe, yes?

2. Is there any way to just delete the ERG valve somehow and leave the air pump just pumping air into the engine bay?

I'm not sure how the ERG Valve functions or if removing it and blocking the opening would work. Anyone have any experience with this valve?
