Loud fan noise rear left trunk
There is an intermittent bad screeching noise which sounds like a fan on its last legs coming from behind the left panel in my trunk. (2004 turbo)
What’s in there?!
It’s coming from where the red circle is.

Look behind the trunk liner for a vent just below where the red circle is. If you have 4-zone climate control, there is an air intake there for the rear evaporator core. If you have an air intake there I’d be concerned that the trunk liner is blocking it.

You can tell by that bump out that you have the 4 zone climate which has a separate blower motor back there. The one in the front fails constantly, so I'm not surprised the one in the back goes out too.

Thanks. I do have 4 zone climate.
I assume it’s a bit involved replacing it. Anyone know if a diy has been written for this? I’ve seen a few write ups referring to the CCU, is that it?
Could I just pull the fuse for the rear blower and live without the rear climate??

Yup, blower motor bearings are suspect. The part isn’t cheap. Look for 955.572.061.01 and check the manufacturer and serial to, perhaps, find the equivalent VAG part cheaper.
Try pulling this fuse for rear blower to check it. If you pull this, I think it may also shut off suspension air compressor:

Another way would be to disconnect the plug at the blower itself. That way you can keep the fuse plugged in.
As for replacing it. There has to be a cheaper alternative; I'd be that blower motor is used in scores of different vehicles. It might involve separating the motor from the plastic blower shroud, but that should be easy.
For example, I replaced the secondary air injection pumps for 1/3 the price using pumps from a late 90's Camaro. They were identical, but I did have to swap housings.
Separately, I'm going to start trying to rebuild things when they fail. The bearings must be available, replace, and it's as good as new.

That’s great info, thanks.
If I go down the unplugging it route then I’ll still have to remove all the side panel I guess so I may as well take a look to see if I can find a cheaper alternative. If I can’t find anything suitable I’ll just unplug it and live with that.

I’ve ordered the new blower now so I’ll still change it but it’s not such a rush now the horrendous noise is gone!👍
