FYI sometimes its NOT just the button that is broke. If you look really carefully, there is a small lip on each side, if it is broke off on either side, even a new button will not work. You have to change out the whole housing. I bought a used assembly on ebay and it worked good. Its hard to describe, but if you go to install the button and it doesnt want to say, you will see what I mean.

On my part, it seems that the retainer tab on each side of the button itself is what breaks after a while
While you are at it - how about aluminum versions of the rear-seat-fold-forward-rest-lug that is between the headrest poles - all mine are split and cracked
(agree with sunglass holder clip!)
I have a few of these in good shape. The best preventative thing you can do is fill with epoxy...
Also have a 3D model STL ( I designed and printed, worked for years till the PLA split - ABS would be better) of this if you have a printer.

Exactly this. Did it some 7 years ago and has never since failed after daily use. Just beware of the spring steel metal piece when refitting. I sliced one of my fingers wide open when refitting...
yup too many small plastic parts that break or fall off and do not know where they belong. SOME have vw part numbers on them so one can eventually figure it out, but certainly tedious as these cars age and the parts become brittle
Lot's of plastic bits. Most interesting, is the little plastic coolant tubing under the intake manifold. I tapped the hole with 3/8 NPT and used a brass fitting.
