$.20cents per mile just for rubber??
This weekend before a long drive to see family, I went to check the air in my tires and I realized the treads on my rears looked like this !!!
LOL So now that made me get the calculator out and figure this one through.....so I got my Cayenne in November 2004 and bough an 18" Rim/Tire package right away and ran the Dunlop Winters from Nov 2005 to April 2005 and then switched back to the 20" Rims in April.
SO That means that last year from April 2005 to October 2005 I burned through brand new factory summer Michelin Diamaris 275/40/R20's !!!!
Now mind you I only have 20k miles on my rig today....which means
I drive ~1k miles a month. which also means I burned through the
michelins after 7k miles. If you do the math with the trusty calculator thats $.20cents per mile just for rubber based on the replacement costs !!!
I think thats a bit insane since my Cayenne Turbo handles fine with the Dunlop Winters on, which by the way have now gone 2 winter seasons and the tread looks brand new !!
So now my quest is to find a tire that has a little higher wear rating but can last me at least 2 summers. Am I asking too much?? So now the list of questions for my fellow rennlisters
1) Has anyone gotten better longevity than me?
2) At press time here, The only 20" OE options were....Michelin 4x4 Diamaris, Continental 4x4 SportContact, Pirelli PZero Rosso all of which are getting the same bad rap for tire wear on Tire Rack
3) Will runnning NON OE tires kill my warranty or something I should be aware of?
4) I noticed the Micheclins have a wear rating of 220? Is this like rubbing a red eraser on the sidewalk? LOL
5) Has anyone run these Hankooks? They have a 440 wear rating will this double my tread life:
http://www.hankooktireusa.com/produc..._ID=23&CatID=5
6) Any other tire companies to try??
6) Should I just run my Dunlop winters all year round?? LOL
7) Should I just slow down?
8) Should I just finish my Weiss Beer here and go to bed??
9) Should I just shut up ....call Tire Rack & bend over every April?
Seriously though guys....I always value your suggestions Thanks for everything !!!

As far as I know and as far as Tire Rack knows it is problematic to compare wear ratings across brands.

My CS came with the 20' Diamaris and they didn't last any better than your set. I also have a winter 18" set and concur, they sure seem to be holding up much better! I am now on the Continentals, and I think the wear rating is 280 on those. I already have 7-8k miles on them and they still look almost new so I am hopeful they will last for a while yet, like you say, maybe two summers.
I could be wrong but I think there are two N spec Michelins, the earlier one had a treadwear of 140 and the later one 220. I think my car had the 140s the first time around and maybe that was the problem. I also noticed that the Contis seem to start with deeper tread than the Michelins.
There are complaints about each one like you mention. I think anytime you ask a high performance summer tire to handle a 5500 lb car you are going to see some serious tire wear. 18" all seasons are probably the remedy but I so much prefer the look of the 20s.

$4.60 a mile? I'm surprised the engineering types on this forum didn't see this. As my math teacher wife says, "You've got to show your work." So...
Assume each Michelin tire is $350. A set of Michelins would cost 4 X $350 = $1400 per set of tires
Assume 7,000 miles per set of tires
$1400 / 7000 miles = $0.20/mile
You can plug in your own numbers. For instance I got over 20,000 miles on my tires and spent $250 per tire for Toyo Proxes so...
(4 X $250) / 21000 miles = $0.047/mile

356 is correct on this one. And I can't belive I haven't chimed in yet being a stats professor myself. But the formula is just a simple algebraic one:
Cost of Tires=$1500
Miles Driven=7000
Cost per Mile= Unknown (call it "x")
7000*(cost per mile or "x")=$1500
7000X=1500
X=.214 or 21.4 Cents a mile
FYI....According to the previous attempt of $4.60 per mile would mean that you spent $32,200 on your tires
Class over.

Anyway the quest still stands to find tires that will last at least twice as long. Which size Toyo Proxes did you have? Do you know what the wear rating was? Also Did you find the ride comfortable....or noisy etc?

FWIW: I've 21M miles on 22" Diamaris with 3/8" remaining. I drive the Cay in "normal" setting, rarely in "sport" and never in "comfort." I am reasonably diligent about keeping tire pressure up (do not have TPMS). No alignment issues. This all equals a big "knock on wood."

Ok, I should have learned better by now Traipse carefully thru the minefield of Rennlist. For me, M=1000 and MM=1000000 and 1K=1024. Yeah, that's being ****, but the idea that "1K" is 1000 bugs me, so ......
