That's actually kind of shocking. Does the dealership not care that their expensive surgery did not fix the problem? I've never heard of a dealer not wanting to gouge someone...

In terms of t-connectors, you do have a turbo, right?

I'd take to a good indy, and print out this thread. I think T2 just did his tees separate from the aluminum pipes not long ago - he might be able to provide the cost. Lots have done it DIY, but it is quite the challenge.

Now, the battery is completely dead. Is it the battery, or did the slow leak of the coolant kill my starter? Sorry if this is the wrong thread to post this.. And thanks in advance.
I thought dead/dying starters exhibited different symptoms. My starter bathed in coolant, but the weep hole does eventually empty the enginge valley contents onto the road or floor of your garage, so I'm thinking you've just got a battery issue.

Default oil bypass tube

i also am a member of the diy coolant tube club, the only issue i had was the oil bypass tube was brittle and cracked when i took it off! $109 later the stealer sold me a new one and i was fine. what a rip for that little plastic tube. use caution on removing it!!!

Thanks Sean. I hope it's the battery. The battery held up for 127K miles, so I guess it's about time... I am picking up the battery tomorrow at a local dealer (not cheap, $320).

That's how you know you did the job right - by snapping off that little white tee. I think my dealer wanted $119.

I have another suggestion to force Porsche to do a recall these coolant pipes. All owners should file a complaint with https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/. The more complaints they receive, the more likely PCA will be forced to do a recall.

I've been down the coolant pipe road as well. Same scenario as most on this forum. In addition to the coolant pipes, I've replaced the ignition coils, the cardan shaft, the battery, the liftgate struts and all brakes in my '04 CS. All that not withstanding, I love my car and am in the process of (trying to) upgrade to an '06 CTTS. The one I'm considering has 35k on it; 2 owners. I'm wondering if there is some way to track the service history?? Can I somehow find out if these issues have been addressed yet or will I be rolling the dice and holding my breath. I asked the dealer; I got a 'vague at best' response. "Everything works, runs great, no known issues" blah, blah, blah. Thoughts??

Well.. probably won't have any effect. The more complaints with reports of injuries they receive the more likely they'll put pressure on PCA. NHTSA has no interest in simple engineering flaws as long as the the flaws don't cause injury to people.

So far I've heard of no one suffering an injury from the 'sploding coolant pipes.

Inconvenience, expense - yes, injury - no. There have been people hypothesizing that an accident could be caused by the cloud of steam blocking vision, but I suspect that since no reports have been seen of this actually happening, it won't carry water with the government.

Also - (I have a friend who used to work for them..) reports of "I heard about this happening and I'm afraid of it happening on my P!G" or "I was afraid of this happening so I replaced my pipes" won't do a thing. Bringing in a conspiracy theory also negates the value of a report (they just think you're a loon..)

Very important is to establish a category (vehicle subsystem) that all the reports are made to. Otherwise the reports aren't grouped so you end up with small numbers of reports in different subsystem categories. NHTSA doesn't do a lot of grouping on their own.

First off, my parts kit didn't include the small o-ring that goes in the front of the T-stat housing (for the coolant line that goes down to the alt), should it have been part of the kit? I would recommend replacing it.

I have a Macgyver solution for removing coolant ect from the small crevices of the engine, only wish I had thought of this before I started the tube replacement. Of course one of these days I'm going to buy a fluid extractor......

Using a wet/dry vac insert a 2' piece of clear vinyl tubing (apx 3/8" dia) into the crevice tool of the vacuum cleaner (my tubing stayed held in the crevice tool just fine), DO NOT TAPE or otherwise close the rest of the opening, there's plenty of suction going through the tube. Use the other end of the tube to vacuum up the coolant. It can also be used to extract coolant from the other openings in the engine. It worked superbly for me, only wish I had figured it out earlier. I have a photo I'll post later.

Works well for getting up under the starter too.
