Cayenne or comparable X5?
Buddy of mine just picked up a used Cayenne S. I liked the idea so well I spent the weekend looking on Cars.com at them. There seem to be some good buys out there at every price point.
Threshold question: Why buy a Cayenne instead of an X5? I did the search. Is it handling, power, or what that made the difference for you?

I think it was all of the above for me. Buy a Cayenne and don't look back.

When I was looking around for a winter vehicle I considered the X5 - only because of the "free" maintenance BMW offers for 4 years. I'm sure it's built into the price of the new vehicles. Cayenne maintenance is not cheap, I was recently quoted $430 for a 1st service (8k miles) on my '09 Cayenne (it's due). I expect subsequent visits to get service will be more than the initial one, but since I'm not there I don't know. I got the Cayenne only because I find the styling of the X5 to be stale, that thing hasn't changed in years. My daughter drives an X5 and really likes it, she's always driven BMW's and is hooked on them. I don't care about handling in a car of this size, a pig is a pig...

The X5 doesn't have as much headroom as the Cayenne, so I won't even fit in the X5 without hunching a little bit. Plus, the interior of the X5 looks cheesy compared to the Cayenne.

I recently looked at the X5's. I was sitting in one saying, "This is really nice. Comfy. Love the body style.
Radio kinda sucks. Overall, very nice. I think this is my next SUV."
The next day I went to the local Porsche dealer. Sat in a Cayenne. I immediately fell in love. The interior looked and felt high quality. It made the X5's interior inferior, cheap and dull. I heard the radio slightly in the background. I turned it up and was completely floored by the enveloping sound quality that included a deep puctuated bass.
The Cayenne just felt more manly.
I now see X5's everywhere, as common as a Subaru Outback.
After my Cayenne experience, I wouldn't even consider the X5.
