Yes, there seems to be a correlation to climate and failures. This makes me think there is a cold temp oiling issue.

Funny thing, I would think that mobil 1 0w-40 would be an excellent oil for cold climates. Mobil 1 did lose some certification after Hurricane Katrina, so may have been a bad batch at one point?
There is a new formulation of this oil, APi SN which suppose to be an improvement.

Here you go, this was back in 2006 with about 12500 miles on the engine and 3667 miles on the oil, this was my second UOA, first one was worse with same mileage and was advised to try an oil with more ester base in it. Colorado climate if that matters.

Porsche replaced the two year old engine in my 04 Cayenne S @ 35,000 miles. We live in the Northeast and on a crisp winter night I heard the ticking from from under the hood. it sounded like a sticky lifter.
After the dealer found metal in the oil-pan, Porsche had them replace the engine. The defective engine was created and sent back to the factory.
The Cayenne has over 150,000 miles and runs great.

So, did Porsche explain what caused the original failure? The TSB's talk about soft cylinder liners on early engines ... supposed to have been "corrected" on replacement short-blocks by using a harder liner material?

The engine was created and sent back to porshe as soon as metal in the oil-pan was found. we were not informed why the engine failed.

... like the way black ops hauls away any 'stealth' aircraft that happen to crash behind enemy lines ...

That was the exact symptom my '05 CS had at 73k miles..... I bought it with 13k miles from a dealer in MN so its first year was in a cold climate.
I moved it to TX and it ran 60k miles before the ticking began.

For anyone who's interested an extremely interesting article on honing of hypereutectic alloys.

Alusil as a linerless technology is well explained.

Thanks, great article and easy to read/understand. Interesting that it's published in 2008 the next gen year ... hopefully that's a good omen :-)

well.... long time coming but my cayenne is finally running with its rebuilt motor. most of the hold was a couple key parts being back ordered through porsche . I pulled motor and shipped to canadian auto recyclers. I would recommend anyone in need of motor going same route. i have put almost 300kms on now and its awesome

Just got told my #6 cylinder is heavily scored (after boroscope). Have an 04 with 129KM. For those who have suspicions about the cold climate, I certainly fall in that category, just moved after almost 2 years in Manitoba (Canada). Just not too sure how to even begin to approach this. A new engine is just under 25 grand plus labor. Not really interested in putting 10 into a rebuild on a car thats worth under 20 either...

Anybody got any luck with Porsche when their cars is out of warranty?

Damn..... Maybe the dealer will work with you to give you a break on parts or labor. $25k seems really high. My short block replacement was $15k all-in (under warranty).

Default 2007 cayenne S knocking sound

I have a 2007 and over the past month has developed a knocking sound, so this below is what the dealer discovered. The noise is still here and they stated that they will have to lift out the engine to inspect further. What do you guys think ?

Did they do the basics of putting a stethoscope to the motor to pinpoint where the noise is coming from first?

5 minutes with a stethoscope and you should be able to tell if its rod, piston, or valve noise.

I'm not 100% I no they used fibre optics to inspect the cylinders
