I would get a borescope inspection on all my cylinders and see if the cylinder walls are indeed scored.

Oh yes. They are scored. We have already established that.
I have felt the scoring with my own hands.
I'm wondering what else could cause it, besides bad rings. We have ruled out carbon and overheating.

I'm not sure if your vin falls into the TSB range for upside down oil scavenger rings - it is a very tight range of vin #'s. I think this may be your only hope of getting a reman motor.

When I had the issue, I really don't know if it was some, all, or just of couple of cylinders had the problem But I was within warranty and they used a borescope after they found bad compression.

I was put on a trademill to run out the clock on my warranty. But I kept on them.

Default 2004 S Porsche replaced my block

I have a 2004 S which starting clicking at 59,000. At 69,000 engine light comes on and dealer scopes the cylinder to find it is scored. Out of warranty , second owner. Fortunately I had a few things going for me-I had three Cayennes ( My dealer serviced all three); My service manager traced all the service records thru to the original owner establishing the vehicle had all service completed timely; I had researched the internet and found 6 or so similar events suffered by others and some historcal informaton:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...acement-2.html

We worked a deal where Porsche provided a new block ( I was informed that the block manufacturer knows there was a problem with certain 04's and is participating in th ereplacement program) and I provide labor. My dealer is thrilled as he gets the work, I get a new block and two year warranty and my daughter gets her car back. Cost to me was less than $5000. I understand from my service manager he did another after mine and Porsche determined it was cheaper to just replace the engine as opposed to rebuilding with a new block. Other benefit to me is new coolant pipes, starter and misc. new parts required by the rebuild. 15,000 miles later the Cayenne still pulls like a horse

Default Thanks

Merk:
Thank you so much for this email and the information on your story. If possible, do you think you could send me an email with the name/number of the dealer where you had the work done?
Thanks again,
Suzoom

I had same problem diagnosed in my 2004 Cayenne S with 61,000 miles - cylinder scoring. The new engine is $25,000 at the dealer and rebuilt ones are hard to come by under $17,000. Does anyone know if a V8 Volkswagen Touareg engine will fit properly in a cayenne? The engines are cheaper and the chassis are identical as they were made as a joint venture. This might be a more reasonable solution.

The VW V8 might fit but you will probably need the engine management and so on from the VW which could be labor intensive. You can make a "Frankenporsche"

Hope this helps. There should be a class action lawsuit for all of these Cayenne engine failures occuring. If you are in the U.S. I would report it as a complaint to NHSTA and to the EPA for the oil burning/emmissions issue.
Resurrecting the thread. My VIN is WP1AB29P25LA61073...Just double checking to see if I am reading this right, and mine IS within range.

I'm a new member with an 05 cayenne S. Never had to post a question as I was always able to search for an answer so thanks to all members for the informative posts. But now I have a question. My Cayenne has developed the infamous knock and has a scored number 7 cylinder. My VIN falls within the above range "except" for the 9th digit (after P)
which is a calculated checkpoint. My calculated checkpoint is a 9 with the TSB being 1-7. So my question(s) are...
What is the calculated checkpoint digit and do you count this when calculating the VIN range? I'm assuming you count it and mine being a 9 I am out of luck with this TSB as the checkpoint range is 1-7?

The check digit is irrelevant. As a 2005 S, if the last 5 of your VIN are above 60626, you are included.
