Default Anyone change the differential oil?

Now that I will be under my pig this weekend checking the brakes...(see other post about "Brake Pad Workshop Light") I have never changed the Diff oil.

Has anyone changed theirs? Looks fairly easy, I have a pump/hose for the fill plug. What kind of fluid?

I'm doing mine this summer too. I'm at about 55K but I'm sure being a Turbo S it is even harder on the shear strength of the oil. I definitely wouldn't wait on 160K for any Cayenne and would do the tranny and filter by 50K~70K if your planning on keeping it long.

One of the main questions is what kind of gear oil? The Burmah SAF AG4 is $75 a litre + shipping (so I have been told...and my local dealer does not sell it to the public). There are a couple of posts talking about using Amsoil or Redline 75W 90 or 85W 140. It only hold 1.5litres so its not a lot...

Thoughts?

Does anyone know what the factory fill is ? -- wonder if they use a synthetic!

Personally -- I'm leaving mine alone.

Okay, after further research and going to the www.porsche.com parts catalog it lists the differential fluid part # and type..

Part#000-043-205-30
75w90

Pelican has it for $57.00 a litre

Good info here!

I have read a few posts on Renntech about replacing the diff fluids and there was mention that the Porsche fluid was very watery and smelled awful. 75w-90 is not very watery but I am going to assume any good synthetic gear oil in the correct weight will do well especially from the boutique variety such as Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple etc.

The front diffs seem to go first, one of those hit or miss deals. Some seem to go forever others seem to fail way before 100k and not a fun inexpensive fix.
Parts guy told me he has sold quite a few front diffs over the years.

Don't forget the transfer case while your at it.

Jeff Clark at Sunset quoted me around $38.- for 1 liter of the Factory fill Burmah oil over a year ago, pricing may have gone up so give him a call.

Someone needs to do a write up with results

i used royal purple in all my diffs and manual transmission...worked like a champ!!!

dont be alarmed of watery substance pouring out of your diffs, i think it qualifies as oil ( slightly)

What kind of Royal Purple? 75w 90 or 75w 140? the 75w90 is for diffs that can take GL-4 or GL-5 the 75w140 is specifically for Gl-5. I haven't been able to verify absolutely GL-5.

I am planning on getting 2 litres of Porsche Burmah gear oil fom sunset and change it for $55 a litre plus tax/shipping. The cayenne holds 1.3. I will use the extra to flush.

Out of curiousity I called my local stealer ( I mean dealer) who I do not trust (some past bad experience and with some other porsche memebers) to aske about the oil. He said the reason you dont see any other differential oil out there is because the "shear factor is to great" and they wont last long. His words not mine. Thoughts on that?
