Default Tire Dilemma - Pirelli, Bridgestone, or Michelin?

getting my car inspected today, and these are the options if I want them installed today:

Michelin Lattitude ---- 369

Bridgestone Turanza ---- 269

Pirelli Scorpion Zero ---- 269

includes mounting and balancing. They are saying I only need two to pass inspection, but the ones on there are Michelin lattitudes -- so should I go with two michelin lattitudes or 4 of one of the others???

If you are "frugal", keep in mind that the tread wear rating on your suggested cheaper tires are also twice as long lasting as the Michelin Lattitude Sport. So an even bigger price difference over the life of the tires.

How bad are the other two, would be my deciding factor.
i.e. if the two good ones were already replaced, I would match them with the equivalent Lattitude (they are great performing tires). If they will fail inspection in a couple of months, I would get it over with and get four of your choice.

Also may want to check if you should be mixing new and worn tires front to back, causing wear to the centre differential on your 4wd (it matters on some configurations, not on others).

Ended up going with two Michelin Latitude Tour HP tires.... I had enough tread on the other two to pass inspection, and I didn't want to mix them up, so I went with the best price I could find locally which was $330/tire installed and balanced.

FYI - if anyone else gets these tires, make sure you get the 109V version. The number refers to the load and speed rating of the tire, and the Latitude Tour HP comes in a 105H and 109V version. The Cayenne requires the 109V version.

The latest tire replacement I went w/ the Continental Extreme Contact DWS 275/40ZR20 tires.

The Michelin Diamaris N1 275/40ZR20 tires are fine, except I was not happy w/ the tread wear.

The Continental tires are holding-up MUCH better for the tread wear.

Hey wingless- I am also considering the same Continental tire for my Cayenne (January delivery). Tirerack has this tire and the Pirelli Verde, both as top rated. Are they quiet?- my biggest concern, I hate tire noise on long highway trips. My son has the Pirelli's on his Toureg and they are very quiet- can't hear any tire noise on the hwy. Tirerack actually has the continentals a little better for noise. What do you think? Thanks.

I can't hear you while I'm driving...

IMO these Continental tires have the same road noise as the Michelin.

But, the vehicle is sooo dead quiet, that they could be different and I wouldn't have noticed. The windows are almost always up, so I haven't had the best road noise comparison.

My estimate is that I am going to get twice the tread life on the Continental. The other parameters are not important to me on this grocery store run vehicle.

Wingless - do you run 275 size tires on the standard 18in rims?

I have the continental DWS's as well. Vey good tire. I've put around 10k on them and very minimal wear. Also lack of road noise.

The 275/40ZR20 tires are installed on the Porsche 20" rim.

When I bought my Cayenne it came with BF Goodrich from the factory. I am pleasantly surprised how they are wearing while providing a good ride ride quality with very little road noise. I do rotate them every 5K miles, and tow ~ a 5K# trailer with them

For me, I would buy them again.

I also have the Conti DWS. Ride is comparable, longevity/treadware is MUCH better, and stopping distances are MUCH longer. These tires are a good compromise, but just don't have the grip of the Michelins.

Not to digress too far from the topic, are there opinions regrading wheel size differences in terms of tire longevity? I was wondering 20s vs. 18s - anyone with experiences regarding this?

On the subject of Conti DSW, I have been very pleased with their longevity, road noise, and grip, but they are on another type of car. I will probably purchase for my Cayenne next round, as I drive Pepper conservatively and am not concerned with super duper handling.

I'm running Michelin on 19s. I have about 18,500 miles on them and will need to replace soon. I think I'll stick with them as they are quiet and handle well. Not cheap.

I have the Mich Lat Tour on 18s. Had a set prior to these and got about 40k miles out of them. Great ride and handle OK.

Much better ride and treadwear than the Bridgestone Dueler and Michelin Diamaris.
