Thanks for the info Bill. Being that it looks like an original or dealer battery I think I'll just replace it.

09RedGTS, I pulled the battery out but I don't see a date on it anywhere. There is a price tag looking sticker but it doesn't have a date.

Usually there is a plastic sticker with numbers punched out. I don't know what the Varta would look like, but have seen others with, for example, Nov and 11 punched out, meaning the battery was installed Nov 2011.

Yes but the date code may be in code and not a normal 01/2011 date like we would expect (much like the date code on tires just not a lot of people know how to read it). The tire code format is mandated by regulations so it's common among all, I have no idea if there is a standard for batteries.
As for the date on a battery I think the warranty starts from the day the battery was installed, not the day it was manufactured.
As I said before, I looked on my original battery (pulled out of the P!g) and did not see anything that looked like a date code I could decipher.

Good luck, let us know if you find one.

Quickly perused the Varta Auto Battery website, didn't find any ref to the date code.

http://www.varta-automotive.com/en-g...ilver-dynamic/

Did find out Varta is owned by Johnson Controls though.

Looked at a battery recommended for Cayenne 4.8L V-8 in Wal-Mart today. It was a Max 8H rated 900 CCA for $120. It had a little round sticker on it that said 5/14. Maybe some other mfrs do make it hard to find/understand. It had a 7 year warranty with 3 year free replacement.

I know the various places you can get batteries sell some for the Cayenne that are cheeper. However, those are generally standard batteries. The AGMs cost a bit more. The best deal I could find was at oreilly auto parts. 169.99 3 year warranty and replacement.

I now have the new battery installed and am holding my breath that it doesn't drain.

Thanks for buying the new battery. Just accessing the battery to take it out to check is such a huge PITA that I just change it out. You should be fine if you don't leave it parked for more than a week or two without a trickle charger.

The dealer tested the starter and found that it was draining the battery. There was no apparent symptoms. I replaced the battery in my 08 at about the same milage as well.

I would be very curious how the starter would be doing it (without symptoms). Any detail?

Yeah, it can but I'm not sure of the mechanism. Many stories like this exist which makes me say that it can happen:

I had a Garmin GPS that I left plugged in all the time and forgot about. When I left the car for 4 or 5 days in the garage, battery was way down and it would not start. After that I am conscious of the constant battery drain of the Garmin. If using the car every day it's not a problem, but it can't be left that way for days without draining the car battery. Those "Diehard tests" do shorten battery life. Draining it way down does cumulative damage.

I too had a similiar problem with my 2004 Cayenne S. Our son had let it go dead when we were away and the battery while fairly new never recovered. Replaced it with a new Bosch/Yussa Silver Battery and it cured the problem
