My 2014 V6 is not nearly as impressive gas-wise, but on a 1600 mile round trip over a weekend (Thurs - Sun), I averaged about 19.9 mpg driving from Atlanta to Gary, IN.

On the way back, my brother was even driving close to 100 at points and the gas mileage was still decent.

When we left for the trip, the truck only had 1100 miles on it, so I really couldn't push it through the mountains, but it was nice and flickable in the turns on the 21" wheels.

Some of you might not like this part, but I didn't find it all that much more enjoyable in the mountains than our 2008 X5 with the sport package that we got rid of to get the Cayenne.

I do like the interior and the acceleration of the Cayenne more though.

In early August we took a trip (3 adults plus gear) from SF Bay Area to Boulder, CO via I-80. One tank to SLC (740 miles). Half a tank the next day to Boulder. Cruising between 75-80 mph most of the way. On return we drove from Boulder to Zion Nat Park via I-70 on 3/4 of a tank. And then headed home from Zion to SF via Las Vegas, Barstow, and Bakersfield on one tank. That stretch was just over 700 miles. Total round trip was over 2800 miles. Great comfort and great range - it's now me that requires a stop and not the CD.

We drove from central Virginia to Tampa and back for the week of July 4th. On I-95, running around 78-85 mph, we averaged 30mpg in our 2014 CD. The trip odometer kept climbing up to 34mpg, but the overall actual mileage was 30mpg.

Fantastic range with the 26+ gallon tank. I stopped in Savannah for gas and that was it.

Very comfortable driving for two of us and luggage.

Yeah, that trip includes a week of around town driving, and some 10 mile back and forth trips on the highways in CO. Also, our route through TX includes long stretches of 75 MPH road where we simply set the cruise at 83 and relax. It also includes an, ahem, spirited 30 minutes of driving on45 South between Dallas and Houston where traffic was a problem. Let's just say that in a 75 MPH zone, I still was worried about a ticket.

After all that, the mileage is outstanding.

You guys are killing me, It's going to be a long wait until November for me. I'm so looking forward to that first trip from Houston up to Cresson without having to wear ear plugs and stop for fuel twice.

Wuss

I started in Loudon County and didn't get fuel until Brunswick GA (damn wife/dogs/kid made me have to stop more frequently though!). The light was on but I think it said it had another 50 miles or so. Then it was on to Lakeland FL with a week driving around central FL on the remainder of the tank. Fill up before we left and stopped somewhere in NC on the way back.

Similar numbers and experience to you regarding the overly optimistic PCM/MFD though.

That is respectable for a gasser, but you do realize the diesel gets 50% better highway economy that turns the SUV into something truly special. For a Porsche, the 5k premium for the TDI is not too expensive compared to other options. I don't ever pretend though to get a positive return though over my expected ownership period. To me, there is something awesome for a 5,000 luxury SUV to have the same fuel cost as a Honda CRV.
I've owned three BMWs and absolutely love them. I currently own a beloved 2009 535i sport package, which continues to thrill me. BMW makes a great car/SUV, no doubt. The Cayenne does step it up with build quality, it really feels like a first class automobile. Seems like a lot of people on this forum also really enjoy their BMWs.

Fast, quiet, fun to drive, comfortable for 4 plus luggage and sips fuel. Worth the price of admission.

My 2014 CD runs about 33-34 mpg on the freeway at about 70-75. It goes a hell of a lot further than my bladder can stand. We have had it a year (in August) and have 6000 miles on it...as my mechanic said...hell, it's not even broken in. We did a road trip out to Oregon just so we could enough miles to do the first oil change.

Quiet, fast, responsive...what's not to like?
