I know this opinion will be unpopular, but there is no such thing as a "bullet proof reliable Cayenne". They all have their issues. Yes, the V6 versions are more reliable, but far from "bullet proof".

FWIW the indy shop I took my Porsches to (when I had them) told me that the most reliable Porsche (of all models) is any year V6 Cayenne (the V8s and V8 turbos are more issue-prone)

I agree with your shop, the VR6 is a good reliable engine. It's just that the rest of the vehicle can be somewhat troublesome.
