Cracking open the beer at the conclusion is the most difficult part.

Get a good extractor. Do it when the engine is warm but not hot (or the extractor hose can collapse). Get the correct socket to remove the filter cartridge cover.

Drink good beer.

Lifetime fuel economy on our '13 Q7 TDI (same motor) is just around 30 mpg. That's not quite as good as my buddy's '13 e-hybrid, which is at 32, but better than you'd expect with a base Cayenne.

Did you drive the diesel? What did you think? Did you get a chance to get it on the highway? That thing will pull from 30 to whenever...

Love it. Is the oil filter cartridge cover accessible from the top or underneath?Wonder if its the same oil filter cover remover for the GT3.

Thanks all...

Everything is on top and easy to access. An oil extractor will get the job done extremely well. It's good to get one that is 10L or more, if you can. If your car is under warranty, it might be a good idea to keep receipts of filters and oil. The cost of the oil (M1) and Mann oil filters ended up costing about $80 per oil change. Add $18 more when it's time to change the fuel filter.

Your buddy's average trip must be relatively short, so the 16-ish miles you can drive in EV mode comprise a decent %-age of the distance. On longer average trips the Diesel should get better mpg. I drove my S eHybrid from Denver to Lake Tahoe and the average mpg for the trip was around 23 mpg. I averaged easily 27 mpg on my 14 CD and that was driving ~80 MPH and going up to Tahoe (7k feet+ elevation gain) from SF Bay Area. I don't think the eHybrid would come close to the 27 I got on the 400 mile round trip drive. . . Ehybrids will get you better MPG if your average trips are shorter. Perfect car for someone that commutes less than 50 miles round trip to work and mostly drives it around town. If you're driving patterns skews towards longer drives, the MPG on the Diesel will win out. You jut won't have the 0-60 in 4.5 sec beast that is the S ehybrid under you, but you'll get better mileage and great handling on the highway. I never got passed on an uphill on my to Tahoe, the torque in the CD at highway speeds is just amazing and the Turbo really makes a difference when climbing at altitude.

Yes, most of his trips are relatively short/around town. On long trips he prefers his 997TT

Interestingly I'm getting far better mileage than we did in our pre-fix '10 Touareg. I'd see 26-27 mpg on the highway with it; with the Q7 I'm seeing 31-32. We bought the Q7 post-fix, with some of the money from turning in the VW. Only thing I miss on the VW is the air suspension...

My 14 CD was the same. I had a 10 Touareg TDI that got around 25 to 26. Sold it back to VW as a result of the diesel gate settlement.

That diesel settlement was a windfall for me. I was first pissed beyond reason about what happened but the system worked (thanks to a dude at CARB who didn't believe the BS he was getting fed). I wound up selling back my 2010 Jetta TDI and my 2010 Touareg TDI in mid 2016 and took the money and bought pretty much straight up a 14 Audi A4 and a 14 CPO CD both w/ ~ 30k miles and I ran the CPO 14 CD (which hadn't yet been modified) through the program and collected those $'s as well. All in I got ~$80k from that settlement and it covered the upgrade from VWs to Audi and Porsche. Never driven the Q7, but the Cayenne is hands down superior to the Touareg TDI which I absolutely loved as well. It was a really good car, just not on the same level as the Porsche though.

Yes, us too. We had bought the '10 Touareg in 2013, IIRC, for $22K. it was a unicorn, one of only a few with air suspension. We drove it for three years and sold it back to VW for almost $30K. We rolled $21K of that over into the '13 Q7 TDI, which is a delightful vehicle. I was really tempted to keep the VW due to its unicorn status, but the money was too good to turn down...and the Q7 is a nice trade up.

Now I'm on the hunt for a well optioned CS or GTS. Saw one locally that had pretty much everything except a pano roof...and I do mean everything. Sticker on the car was $116K. For sale at $35K. Sold before I could get serious about it... I learned...I'll be ready to move on the next well optioned one...particularly if it's within 500 miles...

I was surprised that the car did not have a pano roof...it had a traditional sunroof.

I also saw a weird car on the Porsche.com website -- 2017 base Cayenne with air suspension, pano roof and roof rails, for $45K (ish, can't remember exactly). Not sure why someone would kit out a base Cayenne...

Agreed with everyones comment on oil change, ~$80 and less than 30 minutes and you don't get you hands even dirty! The key I have found is oil temp with the extractor, cooler than ~160F and it takes forever, too hot could damage the hose, so I have found ~180F is the sweet spot, oil extraction takes maybe 5 min at that temp. The other good part is you can see the volume you pulled out, start by adding that much (extractor shows volume on the side) so you know you aren't overfilled. I also added the dipstick, check it there and then run it around until it shows on the gauge. It is always spot on. The previous owner was charged $400 from Porsche to change the oil, I laughed, insanity! We put 5k miles on ours sometimes in just over a month, I would be spending more on oil changes than on fuel!

OK I have a line on a Carmine Red 2014 CD with black 19" Turbo wheels. Is Carmine Red too much on a cayenne? I kind of like it, she who must be obeyed doesn't but will let me go if I want it.

I bought this one. It worked well, I think they make one with a smaller holding capacity but I wanted the option to do 2 cars without having to dump it in between cars.

HI Ken, your link takes me to a bunch of Amazon products, none of which are an oil extractor. I'm interested in buying one. Can you link again please? Many Thanks

Never mind. I tried it again and hit the icon to the left of Amazon and it came up. Cheers...
