yes, 4 failures, 5 cases. We don't have a good enough crystal ball to know. In contrast, my G500 transfer case is all gears, Their failure rate is very rare.. The Cayenne transfer case is clutch pack which appears to be the weak point.

The following is my opinion:
- When the trouble first started, Porsche exercised a recall/campaign but I do not know why.
- Failures continued. Engineers figured it was water entering through the front seal, so then came the front cover kit, and I think a different air deflector.
- Failures continued. Engineers figured the water/contamination was coming through the vent at the top so then came the top vent line kit going up into the engine compartment
- Failures continued. Engineers figured that the clutch plates needed GNC. So around 2018, the supply of transfer cases had the GNC.

Here we are today. Only time will tell. If mine fails again, I will be working with my dealer and PCNA. The engine, transmission, transfer case and diffs should last the life of the car. Based on the activity of this forum, transfer case failures are the leader of the pack. It would not surprise me if PCNA extends the transfer case warranty again. That would be a no brainer because between the kits and GNC, if the problem has been solved then they will see very few warranty repairs. If the failure persists, then the 2nd extended warranty keeps this bad news out of the press and courts. They just need to do the math.

a couple of attachments for you reading pleasure.

My appointment is Monday Feb.28 for my new transfer case. 2014 Cayenne S. First transfer case replaced in June 2018 at 78K miles. The case replacement part at that time was 958 341 010 HX with a vent line 958 301 04710. Current mileage is 111K.
I will report the new case number when complete.

My CTT is a 2012, and I'm on my 3rd TC, this last one was replaced last Spring at 65k miles. No cost to me since it was still within the 10 yr extended warranty that the dealerships can invoke.

My concern is that the next one (which, at the rate I drive mine), will probably not be for another 1.5 -to- 2 years from now, and thus beyond the extended 10yr (from my original "in-service" date, which is July 2022 for me).
Something tells me I'll be paying for the next one,.. and with the horrible rapid depreciation these SUV's suffer,... The $6k replacement cost will be close to 1/4 the value of the vehicle!!! ..... ouch.
If a warranty replacement is done, doesn't the "warranty clock" reset with the new unit?

Anyways, what's the deal with these transfer cases dying?

Dr G7, my understanding is that the clock does not reset when you get a replacement TC. It is 10 yrs from the in-service date of YOUR vehicle (or unlimited miles, probably whichever comes first)

Check out this other thread on the topic (Don Deilenberger has been instrumental in helping all of us. Thanks Don!!)

https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-...sfer-case.html

Also, a Rennlister harlequin posted a picture of his Porsche Letter (I actually never received one of these,... but my dealership assures me its on record,.. I believe them since I'm on my 3rd TC, both replacements for free)....
(hazed out his VIN since I do not have his permission to repost)

My 2016 GTS has 103k miles on the original transfer case. First fluid change wasn't until 90k miles. It's starting to show very early signs of going bad, but is intermittent enough that the dealer hasn't been able to reproduce it in two trips. Am I a world record holder? Hah.

Not all Cayennes have a 10 year warranty on transfer cases. 2011-2014 is 10 years , 2015-2018 is 7 years.

IMHO, there are 4 scenarios regarding warranty and Goodwill

1. Unlimited replacements until the warranty's expiration.
2. Your dealer identifies the failed part on the very last day of the warranty. It gets replaced under warranty when they can get one in, your scheduled and it gets R&I. That new part is out of warranty.
3. The warranty is not applicable due to abuse, accident, etc.
4. Goodwill. Specific to the transfer case, if it fails outside of the warranty (factory, CPO or extended), call PCNA and tell them you want to open a Case. Give them the facts and what you want. I do not recommend asking the dealer to work the goodwill with PCNA because it has been my experience that the PCNA Case manager (sometimes a very junior person, trained but little experience) will try to flow 100% of the Goodwill down to the dealer and it gets confusing. I do let the service manager know what I am doing as a heads up. This is really on VW/PAG/PCNA, not the dealer.

1, 2 and 3 are not how Porsche does it. It is how all manufacturers do it.

Whoever at PAG/PCNA did the math for the 10 and 7 years extended warranty, you can rest assured that it went through all the wickets, engineering, finance, legal, risk, communications, etc. If the transfer cases continue to fail, PAG/PCNA will have to revisit those extensions. Doesn't mean they will do anything about.

Got my CB back, OMG, what a difference. It’s like night and day.

PN 958-341-042-BX

So happy!!!

PS, this is new to me. I just got my Cayenne a week ago and I’m OBSESSED with it!

Its my 5th Porsche (994 Turbo, 928, Boxster and 911), but I may like this the best, this checks so many boxes.

At 63 it’s easy to get in and out of, it has practical storage and I can still drive like I stole it!!!

Well you beat me. Had my transfer case replaced on my 2011 S at around 97k miles. Prior owner noticed symptoms around 84k miles, but had the fluid changed and it quieted down. My symptoms were very intermittent as well and very mild and it took several trips to the dealer to get them to finally confirm it, but I pushed as I was running up against the 10-yr extended warranty clock.

Had the slipping issue back in 2019. Followed that thread and got my TC fluid replaced. Then came the Porsche extended warranty notice. 3 years later the slippage hasn't come back, and my warranty is about to expire next month. How will I convince the dealer to replace the TC?

Without a symptomatic TC, you don't. As potentially cheap insurance you could take it to the dealer complaining of intermittent hallmark TC failure symptoms right before your warranty is out. They won't be able to replicate it, but then at least if it fails a bit outside of warranty you have a bit of a case to make with Porsche.

Are you 100% sure, under any and all circumstances, they're is no judder, shudder or slip? In my situation it was very very slight, only early morning (read cold) start up. All depends on the SA and dealership. It does not cost the dealership anything...in fact, it is $$$ for the dealership. Be ready to leave your car at the dealership for day or two. I left mine for a week (they gave me 2021 Cayenne loaner.)

I have you beat just slightly - I have a 14 GTS with 120k and I’m still on my first TC - changed the fluid at 100k for the first time. Never had any issues. Porsche maintenance says TC fluid change at 160k for what it’s worth.
