Default European Delivery

I received some very helpful information re: European Delivery from Jamie Dillon. She also OK'd posting this info:

Hi Norman,

You are always welcome to call me at any time if that would be easier for you. But to answer these questions:

1. We have a relationship with a few hotels in both Stuttgart and Leipzig that will give you discounted rates. Stuttgart would be the Steigenberger Graf Zeppelin and the Hotel am Schlossgarten. I would personally recommend the Steigenberger. I stayed there myself in October and it is a really nice property and you can't beat the location. Right in the Stuttgart city center. Leipzig hotels are the Marriott Leipzig, and again, The Steigenberger Granhotel Leipzig which is a much newer property. We will cover one night's stay at both Leipzig properties that will be billed directly to us. We are also in contract phases with the Hotel Fuerstenhof in Leipzig which should be processed before you make your trip if that interests you as well.
I will send you two vouchers for entry into the Porsche Musuem, so that will be covered with your tour. As for Weissach, unfortunately that is something that is not available. It requires a lot of approval at the Executive and Board level to get clearance to visit there.

2. We can arrange the insurance extension for you directly with the factory. It actually covers 16 days total, so you would only need to extend it for a few days which shouldn't be too much out of pocket, but I will have to get an exact quote on that for you, and may not be able to do so until Monday. Hopefully that will not be a problem.

3. You will not need any special visas, just your driver's license and passport to verify your identity when picking up the vehicle. Everything you will need for the car (insurance and registration papers) will be given to you at the delivery.

4. We can have the European Navigation installed directly on to your PCM with out a problem. Just so you are aware, there is a $250 charge associated with that. The Navigation company charges a $500 licensing fee for the maps to be installed. We will cover half that cost, and you will be responsible half - just an effort to make it a little more fair. When you return the vehicle, the US Maps will be re-installed so they will be active when you pick it up again state-side. If you prefer not to pay that extra cost, the factory will supply a Garmin-type portable navigation device for free that you can use instead.

5. I will be sending you a welcome letter in the next couple weeks that will also contain some brochure information about the Factory itself, as well as a book that will help aid in planning your European Road tour. One we get closer to the actual delivery I will be sending you a final packet that contains all the specific details about your delivery and any other paperwork you may need to take with you. All the guidelines for returning the vehicle for shipment back will be outlined in that packet as well.

If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I am happy to help in any way I can. Good luck planning!

Kind regards,

Jamie Dillon
European Delivery Specialist, Vehicle Distribution

Additional notes: VAT in the amount of 19% will be added to invoice which will be returned when the car arrives stateside.
Hotel rates are approx $129-$149 versus more than that in Euros normally.

The Steigenberger Zeppelin in Stuttgart is an excellent hotel with all required amenities. There's a fantastic cobblestone walkway just around the corner filled with boutiques and coffee houses. The hotel is also located across the street from the train station; should you wish to venture into the unknown..

I've stayed at both the Steigenberger Graf Zeppelin and the Hotel Am Schlossgarten in Stuttgart. The two hotels are about a block apart and both are very nice; I'd give the nod to the Zeppelin as well. As Andy mentions above, it's right across from the train station and near to the pedestrian promenade that goes through a shopping area and takes you past the provincial capital buildings, state theater, and Landesmuseum. In the summer, open air classical concerts are sometimes held here and you can sneak a listen from the square in front of the post office. The Am Schlossgarten is actually even closer to this area as it kind of backs up against it. You won't go wrong at either hotel.

as Mike mentioned, scratch coppenhagen and you're pretty much set. just don't count on travel times in google maps - there are always LOTS of construction sites on all the freeways in EU (germany, austria, czech republic... you name it) and when you get to i.e. prague, it will take you another hour to get to the hotel if your timing is bad (rush hour traffic). the hotel you chose in prague is good, the parking is about 7 mins away by foot, so make sure you drop off everything at the hotel before you go & park the car.
I'd go ahead and let them install EU maps into your PCM and make sure you turn on TCM while in europe (dunno if you have it stateside, but it's a feature that allows the nav unit to navigate around traffic jams etc. all by itself).

btw I'm in sarasota, FL till saturday, shoot me a PM if you're around here and want any insights from somebody living in europe

PS: it's "safe" to speed around 10% of the actual speed and even if you're like 30km/h over on a freeway, you'll just get like 20 to 50 EUR fine. just be careful around towns, the fines are easily double to quadruple that when you get caught speeding within a town/city.

Thanks lupo.sk Glad to hear the Prague hotel is good. I've added two days and think I'll drop Copenhagen as you and Mike have suggested. Trying to sort out now the "Environmental Badge" required to enter the center of some of these cities including Berlin and even Leipzig. Jamie is going to find out if the car has the required marking to allow this without having to park car outside the zone.

Just revisiting this thread from 8 years ago, I forgot the follow-up! The trip was great and we documented it here in reverse chronological order: http://eurpor.blogspot.com The last entry (first one you see on top) was a ticket I received after I had returned to Florida for going 1km over the tolerated speed limit! If you want to follow the trip, start at the bottom of the blog and work your way up to the next entry. Probably should reverse the order. Anyhow there are lots of pictures at the factory and during the trip. Google bought blogspot and changed things so some of the links to the videos are not going to work. I have them if you're interested, let me know.

Thanks again for those who helped plan this. BTW, some years ago, in-between, maybe in 2015, the Porsche dealer told me that my blog, which I had told him about when I picked up the car here in Florida, had helped him sell cars and european deliveries so he thanked me. No commission however

awesome trip! Maybe I missed on your blog, but how fast did you drive on the autobahn?

Euro delivery should be in every petrolhead's bucket list. I did it back in 2016 with my F80 M3 : https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1272827
There is nothing else like picking up a freshly built German car from its birthplace, then driving it on some of the best roads in the world. Not to mention enjoying the different cultures, food and scenery along the way makes for a really memorable trip.
If money/time was no object, I would do it twice a year.
