I have the Thule Hyper XL. It's a little pricey, but has a low profile (less cross wind and noise issues) holds plenty and looks very nice on a Cayenne. I use the Thule Aero cross rails. They also look sporty and very clean on the car and again feature a low profile for less noise.

You would probably cringe at all the dual ski box setups we have out here, or the rooftop tents that are really popular. Those alone are over 100 lbs and will sleep 2-3 people easily and have roughly 4-500 lb weight limits. They're the least aerodynamic thing you could put on the roof.

I used to carry 4 DH bikes on top of a cargo basket on my S4. That was about 250 lbs between bikes and gear. No issues. The Thule Spirit I had was loaded to the gills when I moved to Colorado after college. I'd guess at least 250 lbs of wood and equipment in there. It also held 5 skis, 4 sets of boots, poles, and a few bags without sneezing.

As long as the weight is distributed evenly, you'll run out of room before you run out of strength.

The only issues with the box on the Cayennes are height and access. We have simple ski racks on the cross bars.

We put the box on my 996TT:

Beautiful car on the avatar pic, but the way.
Most hitch racks fold down or swing out so you can open the hatch, so not a problem. My Kuat bike rack does and it's easy to fold it down even with 2 bikes on it.

The plot thickens... I almost pulled the trigger on a roof box only to realize that it will not clear the stupid low garage door I have. Now I'm not sure what is a smaller evil - remembering to take off the roof box before entering the garage or dealing with a hitch rack and dirty ski bags.

I'm glad I measured the clearance to the door rather than to the garage ceiling, which is much higher - could have been an unpleasant surprise.

Check out Thule's new low-profile boxes. And mate that to a Whisp bar setup.

Just under 11" of clearance from roof to the bottom edge of the door with the car in the lowest setting. Nothing has a chance of working on the roof, it seems. Who built this house....

I guess hitch racks are your only option.

I'm going to move this to the 958 forum since that was the original topic of the thread.

Hang on...

Very quiet below about 70 mph Can go through a touch less car wash no problem about $1000 for the whole setup. Lowest profile set up available. I leave the box attached to the racks with t channel bolts and lift the whole set up off the car with a garage hoist in the summer. Takes about 5 minutes. Stores flush to the ceiling
