There's an audible 'tunk!' when I wiggle the wheel back and forth a small amount.

I confirmed today that a) the steering U-joint recall was performed in '98, and b) the rack itself is not moving (as described in this TSB.

There's a small amount of play in the u-joint right after the column but it seems unrelated to the noise.

Anyone else seen/addressed this?

TIA!

I am contempating dropping the engine this Autumn to attend to engine and gearbox detailing, to powder coat and replace some of the engine tinware.

I have found a few references to engine drops on manual cars but not tiptronic cars.

To do the front engine tinware I believe it is an engine out job.

Please could anyone list the main tasks in dropping the engine on a 964 tiptronic, I guess its best to drop the gearbox at the same time?

Many thanks.

First post - love this forum - I''m starting to look around for a 964 as I had a '82 SC and loved the body style and the 964 seems like the perfect blend of old style with some nice upgrades from my SC - I found this clip of a 964 accelerating on the freeway - does this look like typical acceleration or do you think he's done some engine work? Please let me know your thoughts...

Hi all, RE: 1992 Porsche 964 Engine Rebuild

Considering we are not looking for high horse power or spending a lot of money, What input would you offer for our project?

Background:
We are in the process of rebuilding a 1992 964 3.6L engine for my son's 1978 911 race car. The car has been running a 3.2L Aase built stock spec engine for about 5 years - it is still very strong and a class winner for 2 years. But, we need more torque and minor HP increase to still be competitive within the NASA PTA Class. Based on our weight HP is limited to 248 RWHP and torque lower than HP.

Findings:
We purchased a used 3.6L and have disassembled it to inspect and measure. The engine had a known leak down test indicating rings - but we also found valve issues in #5 & 6 and #5 rod bearing excess wear. Cylinders are out of tolerance spec also.

Approach:
After discussing the issues with our local Porsche Indi shop and Don at EBS(and researching the Forums) we have decided to:
1. send the cylinders to EBS for refinishing and increase to 102MM
2. send heads to local racing engine machine shop for reconditioning-guides,grind,etc.
3. send crankshaft and rods to machine shop for reconditioning and microfinishing
4. send cams to Webcams for regrind to 20/21 - and maybe rockers for recondition
5. replace with JE 12.5CR 102MM piston set
6. replace with ARP rod bolts
7. replace with EBS racing valve springs
8. replace head studs
9. replace rod, main and IS bearings
10. replace flywheel with Patrick 964/915 custom conversion
11. replace front pulley with single belt
12. clean and flush case and valve carrier oil passages
13. reassemble by Porsche Indi shop
14. wiring conversion by Indi shop
15. use existing 915 custom built and geared transmission - rebuilt last year
16. use existing custom 1.75" header system
17. use 964 stock intake and DME
18. when conversion to 3.6 is complete take car to Steve Wong for dyno custom chips

I will be posting this thread on several different places for feedback.
Here: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...-approach.html

Thank you for your time to respond.
Might help someone down the road when they hit a roadblock on similar tasks. the goal is not just maintenance tasks, but problem things that people might search on when they get into trouble

'92 Cab
Clear corners
Front hood struts
Engine lid struts
cut air box like cup style
Suspension swap to Turbo springs, Bilstein HD shocks
Replaced heater hose by rear tires
swapped fuel pump
repaired broke cab top support and put back together
cab top motor cable shortening
swapped radio--- not done with entire rewire- just swapped into the birds nest already there
Rear seat delete removed and lap belts installed.
Replaced reference/crank position sensor with new style connector

Hey guys Im looking to possible squeeze into a 964 soon. It's been a car I have admired since I was just a wee little lad. I've searched a lot on this forum for answers to some of my questions and a lot have been answered but I have a few that perhaps you guys can clear up.

Some backround info is that my GTI may become more of a family daily and I can use this as a weekend car/personal use. I currently do around 5.5k miles a year on the GTI as I go to school via train, etc. I also tend to baby my things often but drive them well also. So here are some questions.

City Ownership

1] This car will be my own daily and probably get around 2-5k a year but I live in the city and wonder with the car being air cooled if that will be a slight issue for me? There are at times a lot of slow stop and go traffic that I usually know how to avoid or get around but sometimes you just get stuck. So would there be potential overheating issues? I know you guys in Florida have higher tempratures all year round but get around with no issues? I read its also possible to add a second oil cooler to prevent issues.
2] This car will not see snow but occasionally will probably end up seeing rain. Is this something you guys really try to avoid?

Stance

One of the pleasing things about this car is that it looks so much better when lowered (as everything does) but it doesn't need to be slammed to look good, it has that very functional good looking stance. But I wonder from you guys that are into the lowered scene, do you guys have any issue with fender rub? I would think that none of you would want to crumple your fenders and I would not thing that Porsche fenders are cheap.

Secondly, how is this car iwth ground clearance when dropped aside from the bumper? Is there anything else that is perhaps caught on bad roads, etc?

Also, a dealership is holding a Gray C2 with 46k on the clock for 45k, seems unreasonable no?

Lastly, are there any NY 964 Rennlisters? I would love to meet an owner and perhaps take me for a ride and share his experience.

Question: Is it possible to remove the outer CV from the axle to exchange with another one that I have?

It appears that the inner circlip is not accessible thru the joint itself and the only access would be to remove the factory crimped boot flange and would most likely be destroyed when removed. I can envision assembly of the joint during the manufacturing / crimping process but removal and replacement is eluding me.

Any thoughts? Other than replacing the entire axle. I have another outer CV of the same part # but it is on a much shorter axle shaft.

The part # for the outer CV is 96433203205 and the entire axle is 96433202408. The overall length is approx 25" long and the axle diameter is approx 1"
Anyone have one laying around for sale? 93 RSA

I just picked up a set of 17" Cup 1s for a pretty good price. They'll need refinishing but they also included some PS2s that are in decent shape. I plan on putting these on my '93 C2. Unfortunately, I think I'll need spacers for the fronts but I'm not sure about the rears?

Here are the wheels part numbers, sizes, and offsets:

Fronts: 965.362.124.05, 7.5J, ET65
Rears: 965.362.128.00, 9, ET55

What size spacers will I need for the fronts?

What size studs will I need to accommodate the new spacers?

Any recommendations on where to buy these items?

What does the "J" stand for in the width of the Fronts?

Will I need spacers for the rears?

Any help answering these questions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Hal

First Post - Oil Level Sensor and Hello

Well here is my first post as a 964 owner – it’s a 964 C4 Cab 92k, and boy did I wait to long to buy one!

After getting it a bit sorted (it hadn’t been properly serviced for 7 years) changing the tyres and getting the wheels aligned so they all point the right way, this car drives beautifully – I love the sound, the connection to the road, it just brings you alive every time and I have now started just going for a drive – something I haven’t done for years – and oddly it seems quite economical – win win to me

I didn’t actually plan on buying a cab, but this one, despite its faults just said take me home. It’s got 70k miles, needs quite a few jobs doing which I am slowly working my way through.

I have found the oil level sender is defective, I tested the circuit, and have obtained a replacement – before I crack on with this job I just had 2 questions, which I have searched on here for but cannot get a definitive answer
The new sensor does not have a gasket, I assume that there is a gasket between the sender and the oil tank – if so does this generally need replacing – I will most likely get one anyway, but good to know in advance.
Looking at the design of the sender – its looks like I will need to drain the oil tank – I assume that is achieved at the drain on the bottom – how much oil is likely to drain out, I assume the tank is sitting higher than the engine, so it will not be the full 11 litres ? will the drain need a new seal or is this reused?

There does not appear to be any wheel arch liner (plastic or otherwise) on the OSR – I can see the tank and associated pipework -should there be liner?

Jobs I have done so far, new tyres, 4 wheel alignment, changed the blown fan fuse (25 amp to 30amp), new brakes all round (uprated pads and discs), fixed all the interior lights, new wipers, it had a full service by a specialist, new wheel bearing, I replaced the fan belt sensor, new wipers, audio to be sorted (bit of a mess from previous install)

Jobs to do – new anti-roll bar links, sort the heating and ventilation system (fan runs all the time since fuse replaced) quite a few bits of bodywork, front and rear struts for front hood/engine cover, bit of heater pipe NSR, under tray clips, replace one hood motor (bracket broke)

Jobs I want to do – uprate the exhaust and induction system – possibly remove the rear blower fan (fabspeed RS part) and change the airbox, think about a G pipe or similar ??

I obtained two 993 hood motors which look the part, not sure if they will need any modification ?

http://964c4.blogspot.co.uk/

Look forward to hearing from you all

cheers
