Friday a week ago I suffered the dreaded IMS failure on my 40K mile vehicle.

While I was driving down the highway wanting to enjoy what I expected to be one the last really beautiful days in western PA I felt the engine "buck" and then a loud set of rattling in the back. Best description that I've heard and agree with is that there was a bucket of bolts rattling around in the engine compartment (I subsequently learned that those bolts were ball bearings.)

Pulled off on the side of the road and turned off the engine. Flipped open the boot and looked in - from top and bottom. Not sure what I was expecting to see but it all looked normal. Restarted the car and it sounded like normal. Continued to my office parking garage - parked - and went into the office for a few hours.

Planned to meet a client for lunch, pulled out and started to drive away. A very nice guy driving a pickup pulled up beside me and told me that I had a big puddle of something dark at the back of my car when I pulled out (didn't see it myself - I approached the car from the front.) I nicely thanked the guy and drove directly to my local dealer located along the lovely ohio river.

The service manager greeted me as usual with a smile and asked how my day was. “I suspect that you’re going to tell me, here’s what happened…” After my short story the manager said “oh, that’s not good.” I asked “how not good is it?” “Really not good. I suspect you have an IMS failure. If that is correct, you’ll nee a new engine. We’ll need to put it up on the lift to confirm.”

“What will this cost?” I asked. “Well, a new crate engine is 12K cost. Since your car is 18 months out of warranty Porsche would typically not cover all of the engine replacement cost. We’ll need to see what they will cover.” “You have been a really good customer, you’ve been diligent with services, we’ve done everything by the book, you’re here between every one of your track events for inspections, fluid changes, etc. – we’ll go to bat for you and see what we can make happen.”

I made 2 calls – one to cancel my lunch meeting and the 2nd to my wife asking that she come retrieve me and buy me lunch. Later that afternoon the service manager called to confirm – the engine was history.

The weekend came and went. Our track committee had our yearly wrap-up review on Saturday morning and our region had our yearly black-tie affair that Saturday evening. I told my story of woe and stated that I was starting to collect donations to my “engine replacement fund.”

Monday I received a call from the service manager. He asked me if I’d be interested in upgrading to the X51 package. I asked how much the additional engine cost would be – he said approx $2,500. I said, “Hell, if I’m already in for at least 12K what’s another 2.5K – Sure, let’s do it.” He completed the appropriate paperwork necessary for Porsche and we then began the waiting to hear back.

Tuesday morning came and went – no word. Tuesday afternoon as well. At one point in the afternoon I received a call from a buddy who just rebuilt his 1978 911 engine to the tune of 18K.

Wednesday morning I received a call from the service manager. “Really great news, Porsche will cover 100% of the engine cost. They agreed to that level if we agreed to provide the labor at cost which we will. You have been a good customer for a long time and we went to bat for you.”

Long story now short – I have an X51 engine on order – which will be installed over the next 2 weeks. The total cost to me (upgraded engine, labor, new clutch, fluids, etc.) is looking to land around $5K. An X51 option for $5K – I’m a happy camper!

Sometimes dark clouds do have silver linings!

I maybe buying tomorrow (1st time Pcar soon-to-be owner) if the dealer and I come to terms on price. It's a 2002 Targa with 13,600 miles. It will come with a new CPO, so I'm not planning on having a PPI. I know some will not agree with that decision, but that's a conversation for another day.

What should I be asking about the car (already has Car Fax)?
List of items I should be checking on the car? I will have them put it on a lift so I can inspect.
Anything esle you can think of that I might miss?

Thanks in advance.

After coming back from Daytona last weekend, I now have fractures running off all the holes in my rotors. Not severe and they don't go from hole to hole, or run to the edge of the rotor surface.

I know it's not urgent that I replace them today, but it's time to at least order something to have on standby.

It seems like there are a ton of options out there. I have no idea where to begin.

I am probably doing 8-10 events a year now and use Pagid yellows.

Pelican has three different brands alone (Sebro, Zimmerman, and OEM). Then there are a whole host of other folks that sells rotors as well. Lots of them for crazy $$$$.

Suggestions on what to replace them with?

I would like to de-automate the rear spoiler on my 99 c2 coupe, i.e., make it
so that I control the deployment of my rear spoiler instead of the car. I looked
though the posts here and it appears that I can simply swap out the stock deck
lid wiring harness with an alternate (part # 996.612.070.51)

My question is:
1. Will installing this wiring harness prevent my stock spoiler from deploying
at 75 mph AND prevent any warning lights?

2. Would I still be able to deploy the spoiler manually using the button under
the dash?

My apologies if this has already been discussed, but I could find anything
that addressed this specific issue.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Hi All,

I'm putting winter tires on my stock Twist wheels (18x8et50f, 18x11et45r) on the C4S. I'm looking to pick up some wheels for the summer - looking at the Lobster Forks (19x8.5et57f, 19x11et67r).

What size spacers should I looking to get? 7mm front, 22mm rears? Or should I go with the 5mm fronts and 15mm rears? I think I may be able to source the latter sets cheaply, but would it fill out the wheel wells adequately? Should I just bite the bullet and pick the former?

I've tried searching the forums and haven't come across the information I need. Thanks in advance!

I finally got my car after being too late on Andy's and too late on another aero 996 FROM Ohio. I found a red 01 aero 996 in MN of all places. After getting a PPI done at the dealer, having some new Michelins from Tire rack mounted at Orr Autosport (great people there BTW), I set off on a 2 day trip back to Florida with the splitter the previous owner had removed riding shotgun.

I drove a few mountain roads in tennesse and Alabama, but for the most part kept the trip safe and easy as it's hard to speed in a bright red Porsche without getting noticed. I got home on a Friday, mounted the splitter since I was tired of looking at it in the seat next to me and turned around Saturday and drove it to Talladega.

About 1 hour into the trip to Talladega someone swerved to avoid a dead deer, causing me to straddle said dead animal.....I see in the rearview mirror the splitter flying in the air. I went back and picked it up, none worse for wear considering a car and bus hit it.

After the Talladega trip I cleaned the car up, put the splitter back on, drove a few days without incident. Just 1 week after being home and cleaning the car up I am on the interstate, someone swerves to avoid a tire shredding off the car in front of them. I'm in the middle lane, nowhere to go....I hit the tire shrapnel. Surely it didn't rip the splitter off again. I exit, and sure enough, it's gone. After getting back on I-10 going back the other way, through an interchange, and getting back off the interstate and back on the correct way to retrieve my precious piece of black plastic I saw it there in the middle lane still. I pull to the side.....it would be 5 o'clock. I wait for a break in cars. I run out, which by the way, those lanes are alittle bigger when you're running, to pick it up. For future reference, people do NOT slow down for people running into interstate traffic. The part still looks relatively good after being ran over by who knows how many people. I'll keep it off for a while.

Anyway, thanks for the tips while I was searching, and I'll do my part to get some better pics.
