It's a head and neck restraint used on the track.

I've never seen one that goes down the back like that apart from bike protection

They have been around for quite a while now. A lot of debate over the years on the R3 vs HANS vs Isaac in the racing forum. One advantage of the R3, the Hutchens and others like them is you don't necessarily need a 5 or 6 point harness for them to be effective and therefore many DE instructors use them with a students stock 3 point seat belt.

Here's their sizing chart....if it weren't for the fact that I'd need a large I'd be all over this.

GLWS !

Buying "used" safety equipment is not a great idea, but GLWS!

I own one of these, some clubs are requiring H&N restraints for racing. this is approved, and is one of the few that works with 3 point seat belts.

perfect for instructors that move from car to car...

have to drill 2 holes in helmet for D rings.
very good price. GLWS

Thanks mrbillfll. RSA333 brings up a good point on used safety equipment. Although I think in this forum when you are buying from someone on rennlist you can generally trust them to be honest about its use and condition. In my case the R3 was used sparingly over the past 4 or 5 years and never in an accident. Knowing how I have treated it and used it I wouldn't hesitate to let a friend or family use it. I just decided to upgrade to HANS for different reasons. Hopefully someone here can use it.
