What will depreciate less (40k mile 981 GT4 vs. newish 718 GTS)?
I am looking at two pre-owned cars that both cost about $80K today and wondering which will likely depreciate less from their current price over the next 3-5 years and 20k miles. I assume the answer is a 981 GT4 in a like-for-like scenario but I wonder if the particulars of these cars tip the scale a different direction.

Of course you would think that the GT4 would retain its value, but the 5 owners may be a concern when you sell. Looking into my crystal ball I'd still say that the GT4 will be the winner.

I would expect the 2019 718 GTS to have a steeper depreciation at this point than the 2016 981 GT4 due to it just being a newer car and also not having the flat six.
I get that the GT4 has had 4 owners and that's somewhat of a "red flag". Although, a solid PPI could alleviate many concerns. I know people (car enthusiasts) that never keep sports cars for more than a year or two, so that might be the case here.
Me personally, I prefer the 718 GTS since it's such a good all-around package, especially if it will be mostly or all street-driven. IMHO, GT4s are a bit boring on the street.
Just my opinion, of course.

718 GTS 4.0, for sure, over the 981 GT4!
718 2.5 GTS is not popular IMHO. I drove 4 banger Porsches for the first 30 years, because I could not afford a 6.
Since 2000, 6 cylinders or 8 only for me!

That wasn't one of the options 😅
I flipped a coin and went a totally different direction: I got a 2019 GT350. Just as fast on every metric (0-60, 70-0, 1/4 mile, skidpad, VIR lap time, Nurburgring lap time) as a 981 GT4 though of course accomplished through a different style. It's a hoot so far. I expect a GT4 may be my next car.

Congrats Mr. Maboomba! I own a 2019 GT350R and it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.
A few pieces of advice:
1. Regularly check the oil. While the Gen 2 motors (2019-2020) aren't known for oil consumption, it's always a good idea to check.
2. Avoid high RPMs until the oil temp is > 180 deg F
3. The paint on these cars is brittle and thin. I highly recommend PPF on the entire front end and also the front part of the rear quarter panels where small rocks flung by the front tires can hit that area and chip the paint.
