Default THE "9" DESIGNATION

Where does the 9 designation in all the model Porsches come from? Or should I say, what is the origin? 911, 924, 928, 944.

Things thay make you go.................. HHMMM?

The real answer is that Porsche chose to use the 9 designation in order to be able to use the Volkswagen parts numbering system. Volkwagen had not yet utilized 9 as the first number in their system, so Porsche started to use it. This info in found in "Excellence Was Expected", the "bible" of Porsche history.

And Renault patented the use of "0" as the middle number in any 3 digit designation for automobile use so Porsche never had a 901, 902 etc model.

I assume that the patent was only used for production cars...and not for race / non production cars?

The 911 was originally the 901 except for that lawsuit...

The model number (356, 550, 911, etc) are all the internal Porsche project ID numbers... except they are all wrong. Project #1 was actually project #7, but they didn't want their first customer to think they were the first customer.

Edit - read the uniqcars link above from Giovanni and it has some wrong info in it - the speedster D never was (one car is pictured with it, but thats it) and it was in '59 not '57, etc.

Just being picky here, but Renault had trademarks on car models with a zero in the middle not patents. Those are totally different things.

I think it's Peugeot, not Renault that has the car models with a zero in the middle
