Default Dunlop Sport Maxx Race Tires Kaput?

It appears those who had the OEM Dunlop Sport Maxx Race tires can no longer order replacements.
On to the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 it is......
Hope these perform as well as the Dunlop's most certainly did!

The Dunlops were a POS, mine gone in 5000 easy street miles. Replaced them with Michelin 4S.

I would absolutely agree with you there as these did not last long at all!

I am running Michelin 4S on the Boxster S and do love how the feel/perform, but am hesitant to put on the GT4 as they seem much more "giving" than the Dunlops?

I run the PS4S on my GT4 for street and wet autocross. If you have any sense your nerve will give out on the street long before the PS4S.

My GT4 came with the dunlops, and I also was disappointed by them -- didn't last long at all. They were gone after the first track weekend.

I preferred the the grip of the Dunlop SportMaxx but performance vs wear is a tradeoff.
My PSC2 start losing serious grip at 7,000 miles

The GT3 track crowd really likes the dunlop sportmaxx race 2 (the new ones made for the 2018 GT3, and now for the 718 GT4). Supposedly they offer better performance and heat stability over a 20 minute track session than the N1 cup2s (again new ones for the 2018 GT3, N1, not N0). See posts by orthojoe and trakcar. The Dunlop Race 2s don't seem to be available in GT4 sizes in the states yet, but they are listed on the European Dunlop website. Hopefully we'll get them soon, especially if RE-71Rs are NLA.

Obviously for street there are better options. I have PS4S on my civic type R and have gotten 25k miles on them and they'll keep going for a few thousand more.

Aside: for track tires the metric for miles is a little different. Comparing two tires, if one lasts 10,000 miles on the street and another lasts 20,000 street miles, but the first one lasts 550 miles on track and the second 500 miles, then the first one would still be better if you track more than 1000 miles per 10,000 street miles.

Mine, too. Not because they wore out. They just sucked.

My 718 spyder came with Dunlop maxx race 2 tires. I was hoping for Cup2 but I guess I will get a chance to try both when I need a replacement? I am not going to fault a tire of this kind on tread life, they are track tires, I have seen people wear out tires in 1 day at the track so depends on how hard you are pushing them. I would like to try the cup 2 track connect versions next though.

The Dunlop maxx race 2 are a totally different tire from the original Dunlops. They are seriously the best track tire available for these cars, without a single doubt. Cup2 are absolute garbage. I despise Cup2. Cup2 are fast for one session and then fall apart more and more each subsequent session. Each session Cup2 are fast for 3 laps and then fall apart. Worthless tires unless you want one try to run a super fast lap on new tires. That is the only time they are faster than Dunlops.

Dunlop maxx race 2 are just as fast as day one as they are when they cord. Dunlop maxx race 2 can run fast laps the entire session without any drop. The tires behave very much like toyoRR.

Dunlop sport maxx race 2 are superior to cup2. Period.

I absolutely agree with you...
After only 2 days of short use, I can definitely tell the difference.
Very unhappy spent all that cash for tires I honestly thought would have been very similar in performance.
Anyone know why Dunlop discontinued for the 981 GT4? Perhaps not enough real drivers to promote inventory?

Bottom line is that I do not feel as "planted" as before: pretty ticked about that.

Maxx race 2 should come in gt4 sizes once the 718 GT4 really gets rolling in arrival/production.
