Default Question on Spyder Brake parts

Hi Everyone,

I just sold my 13' Boxster S and took delivery of my 16' Spyder, I'm extremely excited and looking to start tinkering. First on my list is brakes, the stock pads dust so much it's absurd, however when I look at the typical brands/suppliers the options for Spyder specific brakes is very limited. So here is the question that I was unable to come up with a definitive answer on, are the brakes (pads and rotors) the same as a 991.1 Carrera S? if they are then there are tons of options out there, I'm just confused as to why the name brand companies don't know this is the case? they have no parts listed for Spyders but a lot of options for 991.1 Carrera S's.

If someone can confirm if they are in fact the same that would be extremely helpful, also if you can confirm they are NOT the same that would be helpful as well but also disappointing as that would mean low dust street pad options are very limited. I am looking at G-Loc and CarboTech pads, I messaged both companies last week but have not received a response on fitment for a Sypder.

Thanks!

Congrats on a beautiful car and enjoy.

I’m also interested in feedback here - great question. 🍿

Porterfield's website says 991S front and 991 base rear. Which makes sense because the base/S models are 991 base front and a smaller boxster/cayman specific rear.

Thanks, it seems the 991.1 S and Base have the same rears according to part #'s when you look up pads for each car, not sure on the rotors though.

Porterfield lists them as different. Same basic shape but the S version is a bit taller.

Your Spyder is simply gorgeous. Looks like Sapphire Blue Metallic? I had a '15 991.1 GTS in that color. Still miss the color.

So what’s the consensus here, are our pads and rotors the same as the 991.1S AND more importantly, is there a low-dusting pad solution for street use?

I believe that the Spyder has the same brakes as the GT4. If that's the case, the rotors and pads are the same as a 991 GT3 and, thus, would not be the same as a 991.1S. Unfortunately, there are no low-dust pads available for this application that I know of. This one of the reasons a number of people opted for PCCB's.

I've got the Porterfield RS-4 pads on my spyder and got them from Porterfield- can't remember off the top of my head exactly what the rears are but they knew and sent me the right ones. Not horrible to install just time consuming. Still kick myself for not speccing ceramics when I got it!!

Definitely significantly reduce dust and seem to have a good bite- happy with them.

(put the same pads on my Carrera T and they work great)

the Spyder brakes are NOT the same as the GT4, I have confirmed looking at a few Porsche parts supplier sites that the Front Pads and Rotors on the Spyder are from a 991.1S. Unfortunately the rears are the difficult part and I am unable to nail down exactly what they are. Suncoast lists the rear rotors also fitting the 718 GTS 4.0 however the pads say 2013-2016 Carrera & Carrera 4 models, but doesn't say they fit the 718 GTS 4.0. Other sites show the same part number for 991.1 Carrera and Carrera S models so it's all very confusing when it comes to the rears on the Spyder.

So rear rotors are listed as fitting 718 GTS 4.0 but not pads, and pads are listed as fitting the 991.1 base carrera but doesn't cross reference to the 718...very confusing

I have an instinct that the pads from a 991.1S front, and 991.1 Base rear fit the Spyder, I may just have to buy and do some experimenting but don't really want to go that route if not needed.

according to Pelican's website:

Spyder OEM Brake Pads:
Front: Part #: 991-351-949-04-OEM
Rear: Part #: 991-352-939-02-OEM

Rotors:
Front Left: Part #: 991-351-403-01-OEM Right: Part #: 991-351-404-01-OEM
Rear left: Part #: 981-352-403-00-OEM Right: Part #: 981-352-404-00-OEM

Carrera S OEM brake Pads:
Front: Part #: 991-351-949-04-OEM
Rear:Part #: 991-352-949-04-OEM

Rotors:
Front Left: Part #: 991-351-403-01-OEM Right: Part #: 991-351-404-01-OEM
Rear Left: Part #: 996-352-405-02-OEM Right: Part #: 996-352-406-02-OEM

Carrera Base OEM brake Pads:
Front: Part #: 991-351-939-01-OEM
Rear: Part #: 991-352-939-02-OEM

Rotors:
Front Left: Part #: 997-351-401-01-OEM Right: Part #: 997-351-402-01-OEM
Rear Left: Part #: 991-352-401-00-OEM Right: Part #: 991-352-402-00-OEM

So based on these part numbers, the front Pads from a 991.1S and Front Rotors on a 991.1S are the same on the spyder. The rears however have the same part number as the base 991.1 but all 3 cars have different rear rotor part numbers.

skl - thanks for the review on the Porterfields...i have been reading reviews on them and getting some mixed reviews, a lot saying they dusted more than expected but it's hard to tell as the reviews don't always say what type of car they were on. Any more detail you can provide would be helpful.

So far what I have found is Porterfield R4-S has pads specifically for the Spyder on their website. Other low dust options I found that have pads for Carrera S front and Carrera Base rear are the EBC Redstuff Ceramic pads - anyone have any experience with the EBC"s? Flat-6 sells them and I like the full ceramic pad.
