Are these early production GT4 affected? I have checked the Porsche link where you enter the VIN to check for recall. Did that and it shows no recall.

Canadian car with 6,800 KM

Very few GT4s built around that time (summer 2015) appear to be impacted by the third-gear failure found mostly in cars built after Jan. 2016.

I have done some digging, is it the early production GT4 like mine uses splined 3rd gear where as late 2015 cars uses welding method?

When you mentioned very few failed, are there summer production like mine still failed?

Thanks for the info

I have heard of a couple of pre-2016 builds that failed but have no confirmation. Pretty sure they are mentioned earlier in this thread.

1. Do we really believe that there is an isolated cluster of build dates that are affected?
2. Did the gear design change at any point. My understanding is that ALL GT4 3rd gears are the same?
3. There are reported failures in 718 Cayman, 981 Cayman and Maybe 981 Spyder

Sorry for asking similar questions nut Im just trying to be clear about this problem
Do yourself a favor and look at the actual data-base that is provided in this thread.
It's pretty obvious that builds from March and April of 2016 have the highest failure rate.

Username - RocketGuy3

Date of manufacture - 5/2016

Total miles - ~4900 miles at time of failure

Number of track days - failed on 10th track day

Estimated track miles - ~750 miles

The failed gear - 3rd gear

Brief recount of the failure - Was accelerating out of a turn, engaged 3rd gear, and something felt weird (I would have to review video of exactly how it happened, memory is unclear since I was distracted by botching the turn with a car I'd just passed behind me). Engine just revved freely... no power.

Tires - Original Michelin PSC2s in the rear, had just replaced the original PSC2s up front

Other relevant info - Bone stock Cayman GT4 (had alignment done at dealer to max out negative camber possible from the factory, but that's it)

... I could post a video of when it happened if that's of any value to anyone.

Username - 981 GTS AUSTRALIA

Date of manufacture - 5/2016

Total miles - 65000 kilometres at time of failure

Number of track days - 0

Estimated track miles - 0

The failed gear - 3rd gear

Brief recount of the failure- Shifting upward, 1 - 2 - 3. Just felt as if in neutral. No crunching gears, no noise, no warning lights. Gear selected window displayed 3 and then quickly switches to 5 or 1. No other issues, just drives as if in neutral.

Tires- OEM Yokohama Advan

Other relevant info Drove to dealer. Within two days was told I'd be getting a new gearbox at no cost. Gearbox will be unopened and sent to Stuttgart.

It isn't a GT4...it's a 718 Cayman S. It caught me off guard for a second too.

Ah yeah I just realized he meant production dates for the the GT4 and not just the faulty transmissions

Too soon to tell.

Highly unlikely as they've discovered and fixed the issue.
