Default 6 months for a new key?!?!

So I got my 2018 Macan about 2 1/2 years ago it did come with 2 keys but unfortunately my cousin lost one about a year ago and just recently my toddler was playing with my keychain and threw it in a nearby lake of water to which we were unable to retrieve it. I ordered a key on Amazon that said it would work with my year and model and had it towed to the dealership thinking it’s no big deal. Well they called me and said I can only get a specific key from them made and the wait list is 5-6 months. He said to even attempt to program the key I brought in would be around $250 and he’s about 99% sure it won’t work. My hands are a little tied because I’m like I wont be able to drive my car for 6 months and still have to pay for it. I called almost every locksmith in town including body shops that specialize in foreign vehicles and they all said they don’t do Porsche key reprogramming. Just reaching out and seeing if anyone knows any other options or resources I may be able to utilize before I just give up and accept it lol.

Unfortunately, there appears to be no alternative that I'm aware of. The world chip shortage has reduced production of key fobs. Porsche (and other manufactures) have had trouble supplying enough keys for their regular production models. In fact, Porsche has shipped some of its new vehicles with only one key and a promise to supply the second key at some later time. Luckily, my recently delivered Macan had two keys.

A neighbor recently had one of his 911 keys stop working. The dealer told him that it would take several months to get him a new one. Fortunately, he still has a functioning second key.

Hi,
Other than the dealer the only other way to get a key is via the BCM reprogram route.
You will need to find a specialist key programmer rather than a general auto locksmith.
You would need to take your front BCM out of the car and take it (or send it if youre brave enough) to the specialist who will program new keys for you.
I am aware of a few programmers based in the UK who advertise their services on Ebay.
In your predicament its an option but ordinarily I wouldnt recommend it.

Over on the Cayenne forum there is one member who had success with this guy in California, give him a try.
Locksmith | Top Tech Locksmith Automotive Specialist | United States (toptechautolock.com)

Good luck either way.

Don't just rely on our local dealership. Call around. Some dealers are better, more aggressive, or more creative at getting parts.

It took me three months to replace my key. It was shipped from Germany to Atlanta where the key machine was broken and waiting for parts. It then went to California to be cut then finally here to NJ. I was in constant touch with the parts manager but I don’t know if that helped. Meanwhile I found my missing key so now I have three.

i suggest if you have one key that you order a replacement now. The key cost $400. Dealer programming cost an additional $200. The whole encounter was outrageous and reflects very poorly on Porsche.

As a rule, if I'm ever left with one key to anything I make sure I get a replacement. And as keys to new cars, not just Porsche, are ridiculous in cost and hassle, being left without any is a real problem.

I bought a 718 Boxster GTS in March with one key. The dealer ordered a key at that time and said it would arrive in 2-3 weeks.

I still haven't received it.

The dates kept getting pushed back month after month, the latest update has my key arriving August 30th. I sincerely hope it doesn't shift too much again, because I have a 2023 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 set to arrive end of September. I feel like I may get crushed on a trade in without that 2nd key... and in the meantime I'm one accident or brain fart away from having a bricked car.

This. I have found when one supplier says a part is not available I can sometimes find one who can get it. AutoAtlanta is particularly good at finding parts that other suppliers say are NLA. It does take patience though, they are not fast.

Keys are a unique part however b/c in general only dealers can program them. Independent Porsche shops with PIWIS can generally do anything BUT keys.

I picked up my MY22 992 C2S last year and received one key at time of purchase. They told me 6 months for the second key at that time. I did receive my second key as promised at the 6 month mark. I am supposed to pick up my Macan order in September, I was hoping this time around that both keys will be available at time of purchase, but it sounds like this issue is still a problem for Porsche on all new models.

Since this is a relatively fresh thread, my spare key fob may be of interest to someone. Months after purchasing a 2016 S, my spare key went missing. I sold the Macan in December. Low and behold, my wife was swapping purses last week and found the key fob that had been missing for 5+ years. That said, I have a mint condition key fob from a 2016 S available for purchase. Hit me up if interested. In the meantime, I will come up with a price.

I traded the car to a dealer over 9 months ago who sold the Macan before the ink on my paperwork dried. I doubt the dealer gives two ****s about returning the fob to the new owner.

So your cousin lost a key to your Porsche and he didn't offer to order a new one to replace it then? And you didn't? Then with one key left, you let your toddler play with it? Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency for your dealer. I hope it gets resolved for you but this your fault that you are in this situation, not the dealer.
