Default Anybody replacing the battery BEFORE it dies?

My battery is original from 2017. It seems like these high performance car batteries give you no warning before they quit. If it’s gonna quit sometime this year I would prefer to get ahead of that and just replace it before I get stranded somewhere. This the beginning of year seven, depending on the actual birthdate

what are your thoughts? Thx

Depends on use and climate. Seven years is borderline for guaranteed reliability IMO. For everyone on here who says their battery is older, others will say they had problems earlier. Consider changing it for peace of mind. If it’s not a daily, a Ctek or similar maintainer will extend the life/reliability of the battery beyond otherwise identical use/climate

I have my batteries tested annually. I did change the one in my wife's Audi after it tested back as weak at about the 7 year mark. Didn't want her to be stranded. Last battery I had fail on me failed with no early indication signs in my GTI. Just nothing one morning. Fortunately it was in my driveway so I just worked from home and waited for AAA to come replace it. I prefer to avoid such a situation at some other location. My prior older cars would exhibit hard start signs. I do have a lithium jump pack but don't have one in every car.

I load test the car batteries once a year. If testing shows marginal performance, it gets replaced. The older cars used to indicate weakness by slowing the blower motor during idle conditions. Newer cars don’t give any warning.

Always replace batteries before they die. My standard is 5 years. I replaced my MB batteries (2) at 5 years and two nights ago replaced my wife's BMW battery at 5 years. I plan to replace the Cayenne battery when it reaches 5 years. I replaced a 958-gen Touareg TDI battery at 7 years and it was overdue.

I replaced my 2017’s battery at five years with 30,000 miles. It seemed fine but I was having trouble passing emissions inspection and it was a Hail Mary to get my OBD Fuel System Not Ready resolved. It didn’t work. (After months they figured out the wrong front O2 sensor had been installed at the factory)

I always replace at 4-5 years if no symptoms have shown up yet. Modern car batteries rarely last longer b/c the heavy demand placed on them.

I had an issue with the auto up function on my passenger window not working properly. That prompted me to replace my battery. I think it was 6 years old with 80k miles when I changed it.

I try to change batteries before they die, too, in part so it won’t strand my wife somewhere. My ‘17 Macan GTS is on its original battery, so it may be close. Replacement charts say it could be an H7, H8 or H9. Anyone know for sure which? I know most Porsche battery trays allow multiple sizes, so I probably could use any of these, but I figure it would be better to use the same size. I suppose I could open it up to have a look (kind of a pain to remove the spare, the Bose sub, etc.) but I’d appreciate it if anyone knew before I went to the store.

Yep, take a photo of the part number is best practice. Buy from the dealer, I have found BMW and MB dealers to sell batteries at the same or nearly the same prices as retail parts stores.

Can’t speak for BMW etc but Porsche supplied batteries are generally much more expensive than the equivalent purchased elsewhere. Most suppliers can code to the vehicle, if you’re bothered about it. I suggest you get quotes first

My local Porsche dealer matched the price of battery/installation I found online when I replaced one on my 991. I will use them when the time comes for one in the Macan. Always worth asking.

Batteries seem to be loss leaders at dealers.

I guess it’s all relative. The loss leader pricing for a battery change at my dealership is north of $800. Gulp.
