I haven't taken any pics with the top down yet, but I'll send you one later. My car is dark blue over tan. I'd love to meet up with you guys and hang out, so let me know. As far as the bolts attached to the mechanism are concerned...I am not sure. I would guess they have been loosened considering the previous owner manually operated the top for the time he owned the car as well. But you know what they say about making assumptions..... Worst case, how can I confirm this? You watching the Army Navy game this year???

Great info on Mayo. I will definitely check them out. What do you know about RAC? I went there once to look at a 911 that was for sale, but when I showed up it was already gone. It seemed like a nice shop, but is pretty far out of my way. Mayo is a much better option. That is really cool that you were an Apache driver. I miss flying H-60s and tactical flying. Anyways, thanks again for any information you can offer. Rennlist seems like an amazing forum. I've had Saabs and an Audi before, so it is great to join another forum where people are so helpful!

    Tom,
When I press the switch, the top unlocks. From there, I manually fold the top back. Is that all there is to it? Or is there something else that needs to be done to make sure the top is fully retracted? I went for my first top down drive yesterday, but I didn't have the warm and fuzzy that everything was good to go (being this was the first time manually folding it back). I kept looking in my rear view worrying that it would catch some wind and pop up unexpectedly! The car didn't come with a top cover, so that is on the list of items to purchase. My initial intentions were to repair my top after I purchased the car, but the more I read about it on the forums, the more I am hesitant only because it seems that these tops are prone to issues. I'd hate to spend $3100 on a repair (what the sellers mech quoted me) only to have it break again.

How long have you had your 964 for? How many miles do you have on it? Do you do a lot of your own repairs? Any modifications?

    Hello,
My name is Eric and I am new to reenlist. I recently bought a '91 964 Cab and am having some issues with the top. I bought the car knowing the top was inop, but am looking at options to get it fixed. I've been scouring the forums for some ideas and saw that you seemed to have some issues and that you are in Dallas. Are you still in the DFW area? I've been in Fort Worth for two years now, so am still relatively new to the whole area. Anyways, I'd love to pick your brain if you have a moment about your car. Can you recommend a good independent mech in the metroplex?

Did you fly Apaches? I flew H-60s in the Navy and currently fly for Bell Helicopter. Thanks in advance for any help insight you can offer. I'd really appreciate it!

    Best,
    Eric

C2 or C4? Who did the rebuild? Who maintains it? I don't really have a preferred local shop since I DIY most everything, but I'd get a PPI on it. Shops off the top of my head, i'd say call up RAC, Zim's, and Mayo's and tell them you're considering a 964 and have them give you their opinion on that model and problem areas. You'll be able to tell who has the most experience on these cars (I don't know that answer), and based on that, you can narrow down which PPI shop might be the best for this particular car. Maybe go to the Maverick PCA site and see what shops advertise on Slipstream (PDFs on the site) and include those shops on your list of potentials too.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
No sir, it is not currently listed for sale. It is someone I work with that mentioned he was going to sell it. I told him I was interested in it but I dont know anything about Porsche so I have been doing lots of research. He said he would let it go for a price I can't argue with and I just want to make sure to do a thorough inspection on a deal that may be too good to be true. Here are a few quick details:
91, tip, cab, red w/ black int
    engine rebuilt 5 yrs ago
    mostly undriven past 3 years
    all service records
bat goes dead after sitting for weeks
sometimes caution lights pop up (dont know which ones but will look into when i see the car)

If you can let me know deal breaker things to look for I would appreciate it, otherwise I think I may go through with it if it checks out. (knowing of course 964's require lots of attention).

Is it the one at RAC? If so, they're a legit shop, but I don't know that particular car.
