Thanks again for setting me straight, now Knowing that the tranny can handle the extra power I ordered a tune from UMW. Not sure about the Glen in July. I'm having some back issues so not sure I can make it. I am trying one out in May and it's a 3 day DE. So if that goes ok I will probably try to make a couple more this summer.

Now that I'm through boasting, your forgiveness please, my question to you is where do you see cars like mine headed in value. It's not an example of an "original" car. Mine has no power brakes or ABS, no A/C, no power steering. An although it's not as engineered as my 996tt it's the most fun to drive with the boys on our local mountain twisties. Completely different experiences between these two cars. I have the '75 insured for a $45k value (no where near what I've spent over the years) and wouldn't really want to sell it. But I am interested in the movement in the middy values as they re-emerge with great motors and a classic appearance? You sound like someone who's traded in many of these cars and who just might have a finger on changing values. Thank you sir,

Interesting dialog on the 996Turbo blog today about the mid years 911 engines. My '75 Carrera cost me 2 major rebuilds before I built an '88 3.2 and installed it with several performance upgrades. The car is beautiful, in my humble opinion, and presents as a basically stock Carrera right down to the 15' Fuchs (7/8). It is lowered to a great ride height. Disassembled, stripped to metal and painted with many layers of Guards Red lacquer, no clear coat. Paint is 25 years old and looks incredible. I have 9.9x1 J&E's, 964 cams, euro injection, Ollie's heads/valves & balanced. Connected to a great little 5spd 915. Suspension is very tight with poly bushings, Koni's, strut bar and b-pillar harness'. I've owned this car for well over 32 years.
Needless to say I am very proud of "Precious" as my wife has dubbed her. I believe (on want to anyway) that well sorted, early "real Porsches" will always have a high value once they survive the bottoming out process. Con't on next message...

But after this exchange I am wondering if I should think about taking it to the track now. I have just five track days and plan to add a few more this year. So just need thoughts on whether I am being naive about taking the 1986 out given my expertise levels pretty low. Also will this need major changes to the car for me to track it? Also any other recommendations on how to progress up the DE chain - i am told get brakes first, then seats and harness, and then Bilstein work on suspension. I want to do more but cant find one resource which provides all/lots of information so am all over the place - can you recommend a source maybe books even.

I understand from your post that you have a stock 1985 Carrera and that you take it to the track. I just bought a 1986 Carrera, its pretty much stock except a couple things like brace struts to improve the handling. I currently have a 2004 Boxster S and I use it for the track and city driving - that is completely stock too.
I recently took my 1986 to my mechanic for initial checkup. He was away but his son and his senior mechanic both saw the car. They both commented (almost immediately) that I should use it for the track - one even said its "too nice not to track"! I had bought this stock so that in some years when i have more experience on the track and decide to take the 1986 out I can modify it as I please, otherwise just use it as a collectors' car. This car has 46,500 miles and I am a nutcase for mechanical maintenance and proper care. (I'm an IC engine mechanical engineer by training so I know what to watch for.) The car is so well maintained that my Porsche mechanic, who has done all its service since new, would like to buy it; however, I believe it's just a little out of his reach, financially.

Tracking? Short answer: 2 days in 2005 with my wife at the wheel. Early on, she did her first two DE days in the Turbo - its only track time - and she was sooo conservative. Since then, this Turbo has been one of our daily drivers. I track a Carrara GT and my wife tracks her GT3RS.

I think you'll like it. I would keep this car, but I need the garage space for our incoming 2011 Turbo S.

ps: My wife has 29 DE days now - all in her GT3RS, but for 2 days in my Scuderia and 2 days in the Turbo.
