Default VW TDI 5 door 2012

Thinking of going ahead with buying this car any thoughts? I know it's not a porsche but right now i have no car, and i need a car that i love to compute with.. a 944 turbo will have to come again later.

I have a 2011 VW TDI Jetta Sportwagen.

Great car. Nice torque. Excellent mileage.

Are you talking "5door" as in a Golf Hatchback or as in Jetta Sportwagen or something else? I've read nothing but great reviews of the VW TDI motor.. a potential drawback to me is the relatively low red line might make it feel a bit less sporting. BUt 30-45mpg (or more) might make up for this.

not sure why the thread was moved but OK. yeah looking at the hatchback. My brother has the wagon TDI from 2010 and it's great but not as nimble as the hatchback. I test drove the gas version (170hp) and really loved it, really peppy but they didn't have the TDI hatch available to test drive. I'm wondering if the hp difference is really significant to the TDI.

It was moved because this is THE place to discuss about non Porsche cars.

The TDI is a great DD. It's a VW.. Quality interior *the Euro version, excellent ride and a super efficient engine.

We LOVE our 2011 Sportwagen TDI

Lots of fun to drive considering only 140hp. Plenty of torque off the line and it doesn't sound like it ever struggles like the gas motor does (traded in a 2.5 rabbit). So smoooooth too.

No personal experience, but I've read of several complaints about VW's warranty or lack of, especially concerning the fuel pumps in TDI's.

That said, I've been trying to get my wife to dump her MB R350 for a Sportwagon TDI.

The Sportwagon is all the rage huh? I don't see the huge advantage over the hatchback. it adds 90lbs over the hatchback and you gain a few feet of cargo space. Also for towing wouldn't the balance of the car be off? not to mention you would needs bigger shocks in the rear for towing right? That 90lbs probably doesn't translate very well in the mpg either compared to the golf hatchback.

My daily driver is a 2005.5 Jetta with a 5spd and 2.5l motor. An early one rated at only 150hp (later ones were/are rated at 170hp) . 107K trouble free miles. One warranty issue of failing coil packs at around 80K miles. I average about 28mpg on my mostly highway commuting. The engine can sound course, but its fairly torquey when needed. It does rev higher than the TDI

Not sure how many miles you drive or how many years you keep a car, but at least "run the numbers" to know when you will have paid back the price premium for choosing the TDI up front.

HPFP (high pressure fuel pumps) seem to an issue for EVERYONE.. VW (and audi), Porsche, BMW. Must be something there.. maybe really a "bosch" issue or whoever makes the pumps for these guys.

Towing? What exactly are you looking to tow? I imagine they both have some wimpy 1500lb rating whether sportwagen or golf.

Signed a purchase agreement for the TDI Golf 4 door and on the way home I see the same car on CAA tow truck on the way home.... well, that did not sit well with me. CAA (in canada is private towing) of course could be anything, run out of gas .. lock keys in car but i doubt it

My friend has 2011 Golf TDI and it's excellent. I was surprised at on ramp acceleration and the quietness of the cabin. Fit and finish great also.

You can't go wrong with a modern VW. Fantastic cars. I've owned several TDI versions (including my current Touareg) and love the engines. Maybe I've been lucky, but this is the 4th VW in a row I've owned with little to no issues. My Touareg has 28k miles without a single warranty visit yet. (knock on wood!)

My friend's fiance has one with DSG, and loves it. She loves how it drives, but complains about the cheap hard plastic materials in the interior. She is now shopping for an A3 with the same engine and transmission configuration
