Default Winter tire recommendations.......

Hello all,

As a new owner of an 05 CS, I've tried to read all the prior comments on winter tires, but, have not been able to get a handle on people's experience and preferences.

I living in Boise and being an avid mountain sports participant, I'm looking for experiences/recommendations on tire choice before I plunk down the bucks.....

Many thanks in advance for your kind advice,

KJTrout

I went with Nitto Terra Grapplers on 18" wheels. So far I am pleased. Very good in the snow and they are also for off road use - unlike the Pirelli Ice & Snow or other "winter" tires. The Nitto's only are speed rated to 112 mph - but that's fine by me. I will go back to using the 20" Michelins in the spring (except for any off road adventures).

i have just returned from my winter holiday in switzerland, where we had 4feet of snow(2ft on the road). The cayenne had no problems whatsoever on snow or black ice (even my brothers range rover struggled at times) and i didnt have to use the snow chains. The Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow I have on my 19" wheels are the best IMHO,and its rated upto 150mph. Braking on snow and ice is also phenomenal.

I think this Tyre is now the Forum Recommended Tyre for winter driving!!

I have Dunlop Granteks and am very happy with them. Have Dunlop M2 and M3's on other vehicles and like them as well. Much better on dry pavement than Blizzacks IMHO which my son has on a S4...if you think about it, you're on dry pavement a lot more than in the deep stuff, unless you happen to live up in the Rockies...

I have Pirelli Ice/Snows....18" wheels. Not only are they great in NE snow.......they are the quietest snow tire I have ever owned on any vehicle.

Dunlops for me. Have been spectacular but I believe are slightly more expensive than the Pirellis which have received great reviews.

According to the Porsche web site, the Dunlop Grandtrek WT M2 in size 235/60HR18 is the only snow tire that qualifies for Porsche rating for the Cayenne. These are fine tires that permit the Cayenne to perform properly in adverse conditions.

According to the Tire Rack web site the Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow is also Porsche rated for the Cayenne, in size 235/60HR18.

The Nitto Terra is clearly a nice all terrain tire. But, the manufacturer does NOT claim this is a winter tire. Instead, they claim this to be an all-season mud and snow tire. This is NOT a tire rated by Porsche for the Cayenne. These tires are not offered in sizes specified by Porsche for the Cayenne.

Porsche does specify an all-terrain tire, in two sizes, for the Cayenne. The Pirelli Scorpion A/T is rated by Porsche for the Cayenne in off-road conditions. These are available in 235/60TR18 and 235/65TR17 for the Cayenne.

BTW, the October / November issue of Christophorus usually contains the annual in-depth technical article defining the results of the Porsche tire evaluation. This usually includes photographs of arctic-suited technicians fitting tires in a climate where the sun hardly shines.

For some reason the '05 issue was limited to one page, with almost NO information. Sorry, this doesn't cut it for me.

Cut the fluff before the stuff!

Thanks, that information should be in the '05 issue, or on the web site, like the '05 issue directs the reader.

Those technical articles show the serious business of Porsche tire testing and the value of the N rating.
