The oil filter is the canister type, it's on the bottom/front/left side of the engine. You'll have to remove both sections of the under body panels. As for the drain plugs, there are 2 for the engine, don't have any pics but the main one is pretty much where you would expect it to be, the second is about 9 - 12 in. AFT of the first and up higher in the engine. They're both in the oil pan.

However, there is 1 additional drain plug down there but it's for the front differential or xfer case (don't remember which right now), do NOT drain this one. I think that fluid comes out green from what I've read. It's really not too difficult to figure out when you look at them.

The 2nd (rear) oil drain plug will drop .5 to .75 qt. of oil when you drop it.

+1 on removing the covers.

Use a adjustable torque portable drill with a phillips and a torx head bit in a quick change chuck.

I used a drill for the first time on my 20k mile change and cut a good 7.5 minutes off the process removing the covers. Much faster than a 1/4" drive socket and a flying wrist.

Apologies but I forget the torx bit size... 25 maybe?

The drain plugs (plural on Mk.1s) are torx head not hex. Hex will strip 'em. Ask me how I know.

I don't think I've spent more than 15 min. removing the lower covers, I just don't think it's that big a deal.

If anyone spends more than 15 minutes to remove the cover then they really should consider having a professional change the oil for them.
