A lot of locals take their SUV's on the lake to help tow their bob houses on the lake. Once there is at least a foot of ice, it is pretty safe. Back in the day, according to the old locals, once a carriage drawn by several horses make it across the lake...it's a good sign that the ice is thick enough.

Vinny.

PS. I moved here from Los Angeles, so I wasn't used to seeing people on the frozen lake. Now, I'm amongst many who look forward to getting on the lake once it's frozen. LOL

Ok, now see that thing with towing the houses is not something I would even have thought of. BTW, in the old days did they have a lot of extra horses they didn't really need..... We did used to ice skate on frozen lakes in New Jersey when I was there for a couple of years but I never saw people driving cars on them. Probably didn't get cold enough for long enough. Also, I wasn't old enough to drive at the time, so with a few beers, who knows what I might have tried......

I've driven my 955TT on the frozen Lago di Livigno, Italy and on several frozen lakes in Finland.

Clean ice is not that nice of a playground, not even with winter tyres, as there's practically no grip at all. It's less like driving and more like gliding. But as soon as the surface of the ice gets rough, the fun begins.
