Transmission: 175hrs @ $7500 = 43$/hr
Are these estimates actual or lucky #s? I'd guess 75-100h is high "normal" and $25k should be $35k plus labor and shipping = $40k+... so 2x there
The gear box should be about $15k every 50-75h if treated with kindness... maybe a 100h.... so 4x+ there
I think your sub $1k/h estimate would be closer to $3k/h with more realistic tire usage and less gentle engine/trans life cycles.
Honestly, I hope you are right and this is reassuring. Else it would be cheaper to own a Citation jet....

A cup can be run out of "cup" trim just as economically as a 996 or GT3 racecar if you're not worried about running on slicks, doing your own work and not keeping a sealed engine and trans. It is really just a GT3...then the question is what does it take to run "just" a GT3 or 996... I think there is way more clarity about the cost to run a cup the math has been done over and over...I think everyone else are fooling themselves as to the real costs...

Christians car looked great, checked it out and spent some time with him after Saturdays race. I am jealous, it makes we want to take the "cup" plunge.
Waterford is a tough little track that is also very narrow especially for the higher horsepower cars. It's also nice to race within a few miles of home, that saves big money!

I'll also be at the Chin event this weekend in my 'Baby Cup'. One last hurrah before going in for some much needed love and attention. The diff is completely shot and the suspension has not been set-up since 2011. (Took 2012 off to race in an F-car and just too busy to play this year). Slow lap times will be better than no lap times.

Hey, so some guys think I've sand bagged operating costs by a factor of 4x. Three comments:
1) You might be right. Do you own a 6cup and are willing to share costs?
2) I love my 6cup and don't regret buying it. Did I mention it's the best next thing to se!x?
3) Yes I suck because I run r-compound and shift at 7500. Forgot to mention that a 6 cup is the next best next thing to se!x.

ive owned 2 996 cups. and a few 997s and a rolex cup.
my feeling is you estimates are less than 50% of actual.
listen, you are correct. race cars are awesome, and porsche cup cars are just wicked.
but if someone thinks running a cup can be done at the costs you've presented, which is basically the running costs ofa boxster or cayman, then they will one day have a 35k engine rebuild on their hands they cant afford and their fun in this spor twill come to an end.
my recommendation is that if youare even close to worrying about costs, if you need to run a spreadsheet to ensure you're ok with costs, and its not just a rough range, then you shouldnt race a cup. one time i contemplated running an RSR. i was asking Jim @ PMNA about what he thought the true running costs would be. his first comments were, if you even have to ask, dont even bother. thats from pmna. nuff said.
