Default LSD out for inspection ... not pretty

well its been a bit longer than the 50 hrs I was advised was checkup time so opened it up today

LSD out and will be tested etc.. tomorrow

but this is what greeted me once it was out the way .. ZOOM in on that at your peril!

I figure its been coming for a long time ... but the magnet plug was clean
and the oil hasn't had any noticeable flakage

maybe just a bad shift when I was learning the car?

(for searches: US call that the crown wheel and pinion (CWP) but also called the pinion & spiral bevel gear)

so this means the box is coming out and all kinds of poking about in order
only real upside is it has to be done sometime (earlier better than post-grenade) and pitted gears must be robbing power, right?

Get a Guard diff and don't look back. You won't regret it.

He should post a picture of his new Guard diff. I think on Rennlist, only he and Mooty are in possession of our newly redesigned GT2 Motorsports model. We knocked nearly 6lbs off our previous design.

No, no, sorry if I've created any confusion. All I meant was that your current diff looked to be done and that replacing it with a GT diff would be a great upgrade. I know very little about gearbox's other than I've always used GT stuff in the my past cars and always been happy.

Did you have that thing adjusted regularly, or did you just drive your car without looking at it for +50 hours?

The ring/pinion wear is very common on the cup cars. We see it all the time. Glad you found it before it caused more damage.

BTW the new guard diffs are super nice. We put one in a 993 turbo bell housing conversion last month.

yes the diff is a beaut ... lighter as Matt says and didnt even need polishing
Will need to be slowly broken in before I test it hot but if the positive results on 3 our of seq boxes now running GTgear internals is anything to go by, I'm excited. (Quaife rebuild lasted 4 months so not going there again)

Cory thanks for that (was worried it was my shifting ) - is it the 4.0 (ie 32/8 = 4) issue one to consider ie the nesting of the teeth due to the even number vs the 3.89 off the RS CWP which means its far less likely to nest (ie nests but far less frequently)

wagon - oops! how did that get in there?

Joris - I haven't had it out for 14 race days ... maybe too long?

last question .... do any of you guys drop your 6th and just move 3,4,5 up? I guess that's fine for shorter tracks but big pain on the 800m+ straights

That is theory I have heard as well. It makes sense. The 3.89 wouldn't be a bad way to go if the rules allowed and the desired gear ratios were available.
