I have 2 very decent original 04 Cups that i enjoy driving & don't want to upgrade to anything newer, just love the manual shift & low running cost.

I see the price of 996 Cups on the rise & some decent asking prices in the US & Europe.. general question, is the 996 Cup becoming collectible?

I certainly think and hope so, there are a number of 996 Cup details that will support value rises in the future.

The 996 Cup was the first truly numbers wise and exposure wise successful Racecar Porsche made. Yes you can talk about 910s, 916s, etc. But how many were made? Everyone is a special car, but they only raced at very few special events. The 996 Cups numbered to where they were everywhere around the globe. You could see them on a regular basis at many tracks. Add to that the fact that it is the last of a true driver car (6 speed manual shift). I am not sure of the Gen 1 cars, but I think the Gen2s are going to be extremely sought after. Especially 05s. What 100 or so made in the world and 35ish brought into the states as the changeover to 997s was already taking place at the teams. Thats where I would look for the sweet spot...

Its a double edge sword though. They are so much fun to drive but when they get to valuable people don't want to race them anymore.

These have been the race horses for amateur drivers to live the dream. They came down to the $50ks but as with any Porsche the numbers from attrition lowering supply has driven up pricing. They are the car you still had a g50 gearbox (somewhat reasonable for parts and service) and a motor that has shown can live for over 200 hours and not need every single part replaced. Porsche Motorsports supplemented the parts supply so many items were even dare I say CHEAP to replace (new 6 piston calipers until 18 months ago were $450 each - less than rebuild kit). A lot of that is going away. I know a number of cars that have been retired to collections and Motorsports with ALLLLLL the new models pretty much denies the 996 existence anymore. But go to any track and you will see a lot of very happy guys (and gals as I met Kristie for first time at Sebring) that are competitive and are having fun. And it is always cool to see a 996 Cup beat some Gen1 and 2 997s

Eventually every cup will be a collector item. Some faster than others.

The 996 Cup is going to be the next to see a big rise.

I also believe the 997.2 is going to be strong in the future as well. To me the change from the steel chassis to the aluminum chassis is going to be big in the future. Not as much so, but similar to the 993 to 996 change.

Will aluminum be a plus or minus? I have heard the horror stories with respect to damage repair-ability. May mean fewer around but if you can't even weld stress cracks....I'd think a chassis with any time on it may be hard to unload...I have no idea to be honest.

I am assuming it will be a minus because of how difficult, if at all, to repair. Everyone will gravitate to the 997.2 because it is the best of the steel chassis cars.

Hey guys/gals one additional item to note on future values is individual car history and who drove it, historically that background or lack of it has substantially affected Porsche factory race car values.
