Its unfortunate...but probably a smart move on his part. He sees that McLaren won't be competitive for a few years and he wants to pursue other racing interests before he's too old. He's got nothing to prove in F1 anymore.
Go and win Indy, race sports cars, and be considered one of the greatest all around DRIVERS of all time.

Been seeing that coming for a while; hopefully he ends up with a top team. Better than banging around with a backmarker!

I didn't like Alonso at first but respected his ability as a racing driver. The crap he pulled in his early years such as the spy gate Ferrari secrets he and Pedro De La Rosa conspired on and the absolutely insane fact that he, Flavio Briatore and Renault actually put Piquet into the wall so that Fernando could get a race win can't go without mentioning.
That being said, I garnered more respect for him driving a subpar F1 car and what he could do with it rather than his WDC days. The fact that he couldn't get a top drive and the comments Christen Horner said last week that Fernando causes "chaos" where ever he goes leads me to believe there's something behind the scenes on why he couldn't get a top drive.

He doesn't have a real chance of winning another driver's championship but if he wins the Indy 500 he wins the "triple crown". Its the last big achievement he can reach for with any degree of reasonableness. Winning at Le Mans this past June probably pushed him into this decision although it sounds like he may have made the decision even earlier.
To echo others - he used to be a real ***** but now I enjoy watching him race and listening to his interviews.

^^ Probably not as we're in a different era, but it'd be pretty cool to say you've won all three.
What are the odds that Alonso every drives NASCAR, even for a one off?

He has mentioned it often enough that it appears to matter to him. I think we all have goals that only matter to us so perhaps Alonso wants the triple crown for himself and not because anyone else cares.
I also wonder what this new announcement, on the heels of Ricciardo going to Renault, will do to the drivers market?

Ferrari, Mercedes and Redbull have their #1 drivers. They can't really have 2 without chaos. Remember the trouble Redbull had with Vettel and Weber (who was not a #1) and Mercedes had with Hamilton and Rosberg, these champs could barely handle the pressure of challenges from "good" teammates. Verstappen is too young to handle that pressure well and Horner knows this... Redbull would probably love to have Fernando, but also do not want to lose who they see as their future. Now then... Honda probably doesn't want him and he certainly would need to see proof that they are a winning engine before putting faith in them again.
