Default Transponders.

Not that I'm in any rush since I don't even have a car yet, and I don't plan on racing until Spring '22 but anyways . . . question of the day to keep me entertained this evening when I return from getting a Christmas tree with the fam:

What are the pros and cons of a new subscription transponder versus buying an old hardwired AMB Tranx260? Is there any reason besides long term cost to buy the older model? Is the new technology any better?

Thanks to all who answer.

Buy an old hard wired one if you can find it.

I haven't heard anyone say that the new ones work better. People do say the hardwired 12V version of the older ones is preferable because you don't have to deal with replacing the battery. You have to split the case open and dig out the potting to replace it.

I have been running a battery AMB Tx since 2007 and it still holds charge for a full 4 days. I believe AMB also now sells a non subscription battery Transponder.

But to the point of the thread, is the primary difference the ease of installation versus lack of need to charge?

The new ones that require the subscription are total junk. They are supposed to get power from the car, but have pretty weak wiring and connectors. To be safe on our cars, they are charged by the USB before every race weekend. Then you get the subscription hassles, multiple more passwords, etc.

Or you buy an old one, give it 12v, ground, and call it good.

Is nobody trying to make a better model. Sounds like a business opportunity for someone??

I've always assumed there is something proprietary in it. AMB pretty much has a monopoly on racing timing/scoring, and all the clubs are set up with their equipment.

I think the standard timing loop and software is all AMB. Some clubs do the RF timing, but not pro level.
