Feedback on Nankang AR-1

"Break in" has more to do with the tire life and performance longevity than it does setting personal bests in the first few laps/first session. You say you had no break in issues, but how many sessions did that set last before grip fell off? I think that was the point....break them in properly and you get longer lasting tires....
Mine were heat cycled before track and on point from session 1. Don’t think I’m missing anything, let alone looking for a world of difference. All good so far, fast, easy to use…
Expressed preliminary doubt about AR-1 durability/longevity relative to NT01, but same goes for just about any r comp. Not a knock on AR-1 so much as deserved promotion of NT01 in this area. Very few tires past or present can match.
It's also unlikely that NT01 hasn't received any compound or tech updates over the years. Tires are routinely improved under the radar, they're not necessarily fixed products. "Old tech" is speculative.

I ran the AR1's on a BMW E46 M3 at Mosport this summer and they just kept getting faster. They aren't a Pirelli DH, the grip is more comparable to a CUP2 tire at a much lower price and they don't fall off in performance as the same rate. IF you can get them in your size try them out. I wouldn't use them in the rain though, a Hankook RS4 or something else would make a lot more sense in that case.

AR-1 break in has bearing on both performance longevity and initial grip optimization, i.e., they won't give their best straightaway, require heat cycles + a relax & relink window. (Perhaps more so than other r comps, as suggested in the Grassroots test.)

I ran the AR1's for the first time this weekend and so far so good. I did the recommended heat cycle and 24 hour wait. Only 3 hard sessions on them but I've been impressed with the grip and consistency. I ran 7 consecutive laps within 0.5 seconds (70's and sunny). If the longevity is good this could be my new go-to tire.

On a '15 GT3, I was seeing my fastest laps on the AR1 at 29-30psi as they were coming up. Great, consistent performance up to 32-33psi and then the rears would really start getting slippery past 33psi.

I was going to get a set of the AR-1s for my 981 cayman, my usual track tire sizes are the commonly used 245/40-18 275/40-18 combo, but the only 275 width I can find AR1s in is a 35 profile. My usual track tire size keeps the front/rear diameter difference pretty close to stock (which I understand is important to avoid ABS/PSM issues), while going with 275/35 in the rear minimizes front/rear difference but is significantly changed from stock. Problem or no?

for the 987, the stock is a 235/265/40. I use 255/275/35 in Nankang and they work great.

In fact, I just ordered another set but the 275 are back ordered until the end of the month. I’m giving the Goodyear SC3 a try in the interim.
I can’t compare the AR-1 to Hoosiers but I can to the (RIP) RE-71R, and the Nitto NT01. Pace is slightly faster than my RE-71R times at my local tracks in the Pacific NW. The AR-1 are about 1-2 sec faster than the NT01 but wear quicker. I used to get 8 DE days out of my NT01 and 5-6 days from both the RE71R and AR-1. As much as I loved the NT01, the AR-1 is my new favorite track day tire. We’ll see how the SC3 does.

Any feedback on the road noise with the AR-1? I usually drive to and from my local tracks which are between 120 miles RT to 300 miles RT. I’ve used NT01 on my Cayman before and while loud it wasn’t unbearable.

Another option I am running right now, RT660 and AO52 were unobtanium in correct sizes for my 911T, is the Khumo V730 my tire tester guru comments were lovely tire not quite the pace of the super 200's but good heat tolerance/life and wet grip is good as long as not standing water. Ran them at Putnam this morning temp in the 30's and once I got some heat in them over the 1st 2 laps they did just fine. It doesn't hurt that the price is really good.

The AR-1's are very loud on the street. I would suggest ear plugs for a long trip, which is what I do.
