Track Day car recommendations

I agree, but just some context to why I gave my answer. I have a 2017 Targa GTS that I tracked for 2 years. It is reliable and comfortable to drive to the track and fast. Last year I started converting a 2004 911 to a track car and bought trailer etc. It now has full cage and more with a lot of money in it. I wouldnt not call it reliable yet as I keep spending money on it for something or another each time. Last month at Barber, my new 200 cell cats failed on track and then my truck had a failed lifter towing it back when I was half way home. I had to get someone to drive 2 hours from home and pick me up and tow my trailer/car back from a parking lot I satcin for 4 hours at 11PM on a Sunday. Then I had to get a tow truck to come get my truck the next day. I now have the 911 back together and waiting on truck to be fixed, hopefully, by Thursday so i can use it to tow to VIR. This is why I gave my answer of just buy GT4 and track insurance if want reliable. I also would cal a GT4 liquid as well much more than a 20 year old track car.

I would say Honda S2000 or a E36/E46 M3. Buy one fully caged and done. I have 2 E36 M3's that I race with my son. Look for S54 swapped ones if you can. The S2000 is a bulletproof track car that is really fast. My son is as fast as any Cayman at our track except the clubsports and guys running hoosiers on their GT4s. Both the BMW and S2000's seem to be cheaper than a Cayman for consumables (I have had a 981 and 987 Cayman for the track in the past as well). Good luck!

^ Agreed. Honda S2000 is a great suggestion. I currently track an S54 swapped E36 and can keep up with most everything. The E46 M3 allows you to run larger tires stock vs the E36 and is a more modern car obviously if you prefer that...and don't have to deal with an engine swap to get the +100hp on the E36.

Another S2000 vote here. Can build a perfect track day car for $30k. Very quick. Very rewarding drive. Low consumables.

SS 1LE is a great car for the money as long as you know your consumables will be like owning a cup car. I had a ZL1 1LE for 3 months. Went through a set of tires every 2 days on the track. Pads were lasting 4 days. Just too heavy. They are fast and fun though!

I’m looking for a car I can drive to and on track for HPDE
And I am prioritizing reliability and liquidity
and while I’d love a gt4 I can’t bring myself to track something so valuable without insurance
so can I get some sub-$40k recommendations? And I’ll certainly consider non P cars but I really can’t think of many attractive options
or have track days become the world of “wrench your wreck” or drive a Gt car?
