Default opinions on slicks..

I'm ready to purchase my first set of slicks, so I'd like some input on the best tire, based on , life, grip, and cost, etc. Yokohama seems to be one of the cheaper brands, but only 2 hours of run time. I'll be running 10x18's front and 13x18's rear.
Available manuf. in my size would be:
Yokohama
Dunlop
Avon
Goodyear

Thanks in advance !

How about some Pirelli's

285/645/18 on a 10" wheel
325/650/18 on a 13" wheel

or you could use a taller rear like:
325/705/18 on a 13" wheel

I think they last awhile.

I've driven almost 600 miles at VIR with a set of used Dunlops. Set my fastest time yesterday with a 2:15. OK, it's fast for me.

Guess it depends on the definition of "last" that folks are using. The first two heat cycles with Dunlops are noticably faster. After that, they last forever, albeit, slower than the first two, but there is very little dropoff in performance from that point on. Most of the tires we run are used and have 1-2 heat cycles on them when we mount them up. Occasionally we'll mount up some new slicks if we want to take it to the Porsches at a PBOC weekend.

Thanks guys !
I've heard Dunlop slicks seem to withstand a few more heat cycles than Yokohama. The Yokes are around $ 340 each while the Dunlops are a bit higher at $ 419 each, so it would make sense to me that the run time from the higher priced tire would average out to more track time for the money.

We just ran yokohama's for the first time. We ran pirellis exclusively in the past, and the yoko's are unbelievabley better. I found the pirelli's to be twitchy and unstable on the limit, while the yoko's broke away smoothly. You can control the car much better with the throttle with the yoko's.

We only have 6 heat cycles on them so far, but i turned my fastest lap ever during the 6th heat cycle.

How crazy would it be to run Yokos in back and Dunlops in front? Hazardous crazy?

I've run combinations of Michelins, Yokies and Pirellis together without a problem, matching axles of course.

I also just ran Yokos for the first time last week. Unreal grip. I have not used any other slicks, so I can only compare it to Hoosiers and obviously WAY better.

Bob, I'm with you on this one. I've ran the past three DE's on Yoko slicks and the grip is unreal plus the breakaway is progressive compared to the Kumho's I had been using for the past three to four years. Even with corded and hardened Yoko’s, I’m two to three seconds faster than I ever was on Kumho’s. I did run the Pirelli PZero’s for a while but now I’m keeping them as my street tires. I’ve heard the Dunlop’s stick even better. I’ve got enough Yoko’s for maybe two more DE’s and then I think I’m trying the Dunlops.

George
