Default 981 vs 718 GTs at VIR

Title should say "GT4s"

What a fantastic weekend with PCA FSR at VIR! These cars seem mostly evenly matched on the track...

I tracked a 981 for 4 1/2 years and now have a 718 which I haven't tracked. The 718 seems to have a broader power band as well as more horsepower. Great video, I think you were driving a better line and cornering a little faster.

Thanks!

It is really hard to tell on the video with the wide angle lens or whatever it is, but the 718 was definitely gaining on me in the straights. It was not a huge amount, but definitely noticeable.

If you recorded lap times on your 981, that will be about the best comparison - with the same driver! When does the 718 get introduced to the track?

Nice video and good flow. How can you tell they are evenly matched though?

The driver is the greatest performance variable in the driving equation!

Always! I did like when Jan Heylen and Charlie Belluardo raced against the 718 ClubSport MRs in their 981 CS Evo - and beat them most of the time.

Anecdotal evidence, really. Obviously none of us are pros, but for the weekend track warriors in the same run group running the 981 and 718, no one seemed to have a clear advantage over three days of driving. I did not explicitly count how many 718 and 981 GT4s were there, but at least three of each in the same group. When you are on the straight with both of you flat out lap after lap and go through the cycle of gaining a bit here and losing a bit there, you kinda come to the conclusion of "evenly matched," which I suppose would translate to +/- seconds of lap time (not tenths). Several of us talked about it as well.

I would think pros could tease out the 718's extra HP and next-gen improvements to their advantage, but we ain't pros, yet

Hah! That was true immediately after the 718 GT4 CS came out, but now, at VIR, the 718 GT4 CS (same driver, Jan) is just a little more than 1.5 seconds quicker than the 981 GT4 CS, the 718 down to 1:53.xxx

I think the OP is talking about the street car versions! Both are marvelous tools for this craft!

Yes, street versions. I wasn't timing, but I suspect we were running 2:08-2:11-ish without traffic. One 981 had slicks - not sure about 718s. What's a few seconds among friends!

I was in the Black M3 with the wing....#717. Were you the guy I was running with on Sunday afternoon? It was a red GT4 and I spoke to the guy after the session (we had some fun) but I have already forgotten his name...ugh.

I think I remember you, but I was in the guards red (kind of an orange-ish red) 981 and had to leave at lunch on Sunday. There was also a carmine red (more of a classic red) 981 and a guards red 718. The 981 v 718 wing edges have different treatments, but overall they look very similar. It was quite a fast group, but the black vette (C8 maybe?) and Camaro seemed a notch above the rest of us.
