Track that GT3. Track it like you stole it.
One of my track cars is a 991.2 MT GT3.
You will not be disappointed. Those GT cars belong in the track, not under a cover in a garage or as a weekend nice weather car.
Track that chit and track it like you mean it. Just do it.
Have fun and be safe.....

Drifting
Years ago, I was a track rat. Spent at least 1 weekend per month at Laguna Seca, Thunderhill, or Sonoma. I had an e36 M3 which I built into a well sorted race car over a 2-3 year period, planning to get my license start racing GTS3. Then work got super busy, had a son, sold the M3, and haven’t been on track since 2018.
Getting the itch again. I have an allocation for a 992 GT3. Should I track it? It was my dream car and now I can afford to total one. But it vastly exceeds my abilities then, certainly now. Or should I get something lower power like a GT4 or even a prepped Cayman and work my way back up.
I also struggle with the idea of tracking a car without proper safely equipment (minimally a half cage, 5 point, and HANS) hard. But I don’t really want to tear up a GT3 or at least want to keep it reasonably street-able.
Thr answer is probably a TTS to DD and a lightly track prepped GT3, which is finally fine but would **** off wife. Help.

Having right seat gt3 experience in some of the newer versions -- if you keep your ego in check and the nannies on -- I'm not sure the car will let you hurt it :-)
If you go to enjoy the weekend, your time at the track, and not out to break any track records (from a drivers mentality perspective) -- you'll be perfectly fine in a newer gt3

Do you actually want to get into racing like you were planning when you had the M3? Or, strictly sticking to track days?
If the former, I'd get whatever for the street (GT3 or TTS) and pickup a used GT4 Cayman race car for the track (and leave it with a shop to store, maintain and run it properly while also not rubbing it in the wifes face every time she goes in the garage). Get some coaching to help get the rust off and have at it.
If the latter, there's nothing wrong with balling out in a new GT3 street car for track days if you don't mind the costs.
I was in a similar situation as yours (albeit years ago and a longer gap between hard core track days -> work taking over my life -> then going back to the track). My intention was to race so I went straight into that.

I think you might find the GT4 a little frustrating on the track given your experience- I tracked 911s and 718s at Porsche Experience days and then ran my own GT4 MT. Whilst fantastic on the twisties it just lacked the oomph in the straights compared to the 911s. I'm waiting for my 992 Gt3 and will certainly track it 🙂

After a few sporadic experiences with BMW's at the track, my first track car was a 997.2 GT3. I enjoyed every minute. Probably my evolution was slower as I took it easy and ensuring that I was taking it back home in one piece. Could have learnt more with a lower power car, a cheaper car ? Maybe... anyway I enjoyed every minute of it! So... if you're up to it, do it you can certainly do it!

The 992 (a vignette)
Scene: Hallway of hospital
<wife>: Doctor, I know he has been in the hospital for many weeks now, but do you think he will make it?
[faint off camera voice from inside hospital room]
<wintershade>: I really regret buying that 992.
<doctor>: He's not going to make it.

Get the GT3. Enjoy the heck out of it on and off track. When you’re ready to get back into racing, buy a race car. I recommend the Spec Boxsters. Best wheel to wheel racing bang for the buck. Oh, and come back to visit for Sonoma, Laguna Seca and Thunderhill.
I had a 997.1 GT3, fully track prepped. Loved it, but when I was looking to get into racing I really liked how the SPB gang was racing. Best decision I’ve made.
Yes, I’m happily biased. :-)

I've been tracking my 991.1 GT3 on the streetable Cup 2 tires for the past 6-7 years. I haven't replaced the car because I'm still blown away by how good and fun the car is. It responds well to your inputs and is plenty fast, but not crazy fast.
Safety is a concern with any street car driven on the track, but I've been willing to drive mine hard with a roll bar, harness, and HANS as my safety gear, and I take safety seriously.
992 GT3 should be even better than the 991.1, and you already have track experience, so I say go for it and have fun.

A guy on here (GT3Jockey) learned track driving with a 991.1 GT3. He put in many days on it and got very fast. It didn't seem to hamper his driving skills. He's now tracking an insane car - A Lambo Super Trofeo race car. He's really good in that car.
Enjoy your GT3! I'm jealous!
