Default Formula One - 2022 / Lights out and away we go!

First qualifying is over and wow - a Haas out qualifies a Mercedes? Who could have seen this?

Bottas must be grinning ear to ear to beat Russel.

These cars look like bricks with no suspension.

This is going to be a wild season.

Excellent start to what appears to be an interesting F1 season in the making. Bottas outqualifying Russel was perfect! As for KMag, his break away from F1 into other series seems to have emboldened him. Likable situation all around... unless you are a Merc fan.

George’s scrappy lap mistake put him where he is, I expect he’ll race better.

Great to see Red up front, Bottas and KMag punching way above their weight and closer parity throughout the field.

BRAVO and fantastic qualifying result for Ferrari but there's no points awarded on Saturday. Let's see if they have the race pace with full fuel tanks and what their tire degradation is as compared to the others.

Rumor is that Toto was heard saying this after today's qualifying session:

"NO, NO, NO, .. VALLTERRI, this isn't right!" LOL

Interesting qualy order. Now we'll see how how they do outside of flying laps with their aero issues in traffic. Should be pretty interesting.

Really looking forward to a new season with new challengers. Besides shaking up the order, can't wait to see how much the new-spec aero will improve ability to follow more closely and overtake.

Also, curious as to how the driver lineups will influence the driver and team championships. The red cars have a solid pair of drivers, vs. Red Bull that I fear has Perez a step behind his team mate.

Will also enjoy watching how HAM does in a car that's not the best of the field, assuming that's how it plays out. Racing against George and also the cars not lined up out front.

I am sure the first half of the season will have a bunch of surprises, hoping there is still lots of intrigue by the time they roll through for my local race.

Cheers

Matt

Oh, and speaking for Sky coverage, I am totally OK with the addition of Naomi Schiff.

Yes, very OK.

What a crazy race! Nice to see Max and Leclerc swap places several times before it all went wrong for RB.

I guess Mercedes showed that it is better to be slow and reliable. Feel bad for Red Bull and Pierre. Was having flashbacks of Romain Grosjean as we do not see many F1 cars burn like that in recent years.

I had forgotten what the Italian national anthem sounded like. Holy crow is it obnoxiously long!

Haas with both cars fighting for points! Where is Mclaren?

The only thing I will say is that while the cars look nice (perhaps more and more like Indy cars) they look like $hit coming down the road. I hope they get that porpoising fixed.

Just a fantastic race, good hard racing that was clean up and down the grid. Happy for Ferrari, Binotto, LEC, SAI, HAAS/KMag, and both Alfa drivers in the points!

It looks like McLaren got it wrong and it's going to be a long season for them.

I don't know if Ferrari have the ability to keep this pace and development up throughout the year, but it does look like it's going to be a 3 team race now as RB have 3 of their 4 Honda powered units fail and Mercedes isn't quite on pace.... YET..... their engineers are too good not to figure this out and it's a long season. Meanwhile, Ferrari gets a little bit of a head start out of the gates so when RBR and Mercedes get their $hit together, it will be much more interesting.

Post-race interview the RBPT issue in the two RB cars was "fuel supply" related. Not lack of fuel. My WAG would be the new fuel cells (tougher due to Grosjean's accident) and maybe reconfiguration of the shape of the cell due to the new car designs resulted in an undiscovered issue when fuel is low. Gasly said his just shut off and then he smelled a BBQ behind him, so different issue on the AlphaTauri car.

Edit: Forgot....Horner said in a post-race interview when asked if they would be taking new power units and being closer to penalties for doing so and he said flat out "...no, there was nothing wrong with the power unit".

Very good debut for the new formula I'd say. Enjoyed it a lot.

The ability to follow, pass (and re-pass) was significantly improved to my eyes. DRS remains a factor, but not obnoxiously so.

Overall a pretty reliable field, all things considered for a 1st race in brand new cars.

I see RBR fixing what went wrong, Mercedes improving significantly, and Ferrari trying to hang on to their early development lead.

Stoked to see the Ferrari powered cars clearly advanced and in the mix. And Aston, ugh.

Cheers

Matt

Passing was greatly improved.
And reliability is/was always part of he excitement of racing.
I found it an improved product.

The best part of their race was passing the safety car to get back on the lead lap, and they had trouble getting by him too....

Go Ferrari!! At least until Toto calls for a cheater inspection...
