Which forum for new 1978 911 race car build?

Default Which forum for new 1978 911 race car build?

Which Rennlist forum for new 1978 911 race car build questions?

I just bought a rolling chassis and motor and want to start the long process of bringing the car back to life as a track car. My initial thoughts is to build it per Club Racings Spec 911 class. Any and all advise is greatly welcomed.

Sorry-- Spec 911 started here in Norcal. Invented by my friends Jerry Woods and Rich Walton and first run in the Porsche Racing Club (PRC). I helped create the PRC, and I was in charge of rules for over a decade.

Spec 911 was accepted as a Club Racing class many years ago.

There have been some developments regarding Spec 911 and 911Cup.

Check out the results from the recent PCA Club Race at Buttonwillow. I think all of our Spec 911 racers were classed as 911Cup.

There is some collective knowledge out here regarding what makes these car go fast (besides the drivers).

I suspect that some of our local Spec 911/911Cup racers will be at Laguna Seca June 3-5 for the next PCA GGR Club Race.

Since you are on the east coast I would look at 911 Cup, E or F class with PCA. You can also run the car in PCA's "Vintage" racing classes as well.

I like the idea of Vintage classes. A dream would be to do the Monterey historic racing at Laguna Seca.

If you are on the US East Coast and want to race with PCA, 911Cup or Vintage are the classes to build for. Info is in the PCA rule book. No dedicated forum here on RL.

Two FB Groups you may want to join:
- PCA 911 Cup
- PCA Vintage Racing

You should be able to get some questions answered via those groups

Note - PCA is merging Spec911 and 911Cup cars into one class. Most of the cars built to the Spec911 specifications are on the west coast with a few spread across the country. Most of the cars built to original 911 Cup specifications (D/E/F 911) are on the east coast, plus Texas and North Mid West.

PCA Vintage Group is mostly in the mid-Atlantic / northeast (where they have their own run group at the Lime Rock, Summit Point and Carolina Motorsports club races) but cars that meet the PCA vintage class rules set can run in a PCA club race event.

Merging? 911Cup and Spec911 are already merged. Spec911 doesn't really exist as a race class anymore...only as a set of rules.

The Spec911 rules are the least likely to change as 911Cup moves forward so I would think building the car to Spec911 rules makes the most sense.

I will look into the PCA 911 Cup/Vintage requirements for the build. This project will be a 4-5 year project for me due to the amount of work and the funding necessary. This will be my track car so now I will keep my 997.2 stock and do all of the performance modification to the 78.

Correct - sort of - current rules still show both classes and state that SP911 can race in either class. However, at this point, all the west coast SP911 cars have opted to race in the 911 Cup class.

from the current rules - "SP911 cars may elect register and race in 911 Cup, under the SP911 rules and configuration. Such cars may change their registered class from race run group to race run group using the normal Change Request Form at the event. National championship points will apply only in the class applied in each particular race run group."


An example of a race on the east coast where an SP911 car ran in the SP911 class while there was also a 911 Cup entry.

Technically, that is correct. But there was a meeting at the Thunderhill PCA Club in April with all the Spec911 racers where it was decided that Spec911 would no longer be used as a race class and that the Spec911 cars would all participate in 911Cup.

911CUP has the most beautiful cars and the prettiest drivers, duh.

911Cup is where you want to go. Spec911 doesn’t exist anywhere but NorCal and even there it is slowly transitioning to the PCA spec.

Question for the Spec911 guys: how can you run 911Cup with 9.8 compression on 3.2’s? Everyone else, including PCA, requires the stock 9.5.

Spec911s run in 911Cup so building to either rules is just fine. The cars have transitioned and did not have to change a thing.

Awesome to hear of another air cooled racecar coming together! I'm sure you'll see this in your research, but a fundamental first question is the type of racing you want to compete in. If it's a spec-type series with championship points, great competition, and "equal" cars then 911cup is probably a better fit.

Vintage has minimal rules/restrictions on car prep so there can be quite a variance in car performance even within the individual vintage classes. The racing is great fun, normally you have people with similar lap times to battle with, and it can be especially fun battling cars that have different strengths from yours. You can run a 911cup in vintage and both options also afford you the opportunity to run with other vintage groups aside from PCA. Fyi, I campaign an air-cooled in vintage.

Vintage racing fit my goal of building a replica of the 3.0 RSR I drove in IMSA-Camel GT races during the '70s.
